His father Emanuel Lang was a mixed grain and cattle farmer, instilling in him a strong work ethic, along with the importance of receiving a good education. He attended the University of Saskatchewan, graduating from the School of Agriculture in 1947. Ed had a natural affinity for the cattle industry beginning at a very young age, he was active in the 4H club, Saskatchewan Beef Calf Club, which became evident in 1946 when he won individual honors as the Grand Aggregate at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, Ont, recording the highest marks in the competitions history. He and his brother, Harry Lang also won the team event becoming the second Saskatchewan team in history to do so. In addition to his love for the cattle and farming industries, Ed was an exceptional athlete which was demonstrated playing both junior and senior hockey and baseball with the Swift Current Indians, to name a few, where he earned many accolades and rewards in every endeavor he participated in. He went on to coach minor hockey and was a great supporter of sports throughout the city and province of Saskatchewan. One of his greatest achievements and passions was mentoring young people whether it be in sports or the business arena. He began a long successful career in 1947 when he accepted a position with the Swift Canadian Packers in Moose Jaw, SK. He was then recruited to come to Swift Current to play both hockey and baseball while he maintained his position in the beef industry as a cattle buyer for the Swift Current area. He ventured out on his own in 1952 buying and selling all classes of cattle throughout Canada and the United States. Forging his own path in the beef industry, he became the largest individual supplier of Western Feeder Cattle in Canada. His reputation was buying and selling top quality cattle, doing business with a handshake and a commitment to honesty and integrity within the cattle industry. As he continued to break ground as an entrepreneur in multiple areas of the beef and grain industry, he owned and or operated Topline Feeds, Lang Cattle Company, Beswick and Lang Cattle Company, Lang Trucking and Lang and Son's. In addition, he mentored, trained and was financier for several of the largest cattle brokers in Canada. He also had a great commitment and passion for his community, also assisting in the support and financing of numerous local businesses, who along with his own ventures, provided many jobs in Swift Current and surrounding areas and continue to do so to this day. He supported, contributed to and was a long standing member in many local organizations including the Knights of Columbus, Royal Canadian Legion, Eagles Lodge, and Elks Lodge. He was past chairman for the chamber of Commerce, the Swift Current Exhibition Association Livestock Committee, Past President for the Swift Current Separate School Board and was inducted into the Saskatchewan Agriculture Hall of Fame in 1998. One of his long time hobbies was his love of race horses, which he owned and operated out of Woodbine Racetrack, in Toronto. He has been recognized for several achievements and awards in local, provincial and federal governments. He loved to share his many wonderful and funny stories with his family and friends. You could not help learning or laughing in some way if you spent any time in his company. He has been sought out to share his expertise, opinion, and guidance to a large part of the ranching and farming communities, assisting them in any way he could. The family greatly appreciates your outpouring of love and support through this difficult time and directs any donations you would like to make to the Salvation Army or to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
