Helen J.  Matthews-Taylor

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Helen J. (Gould) Matthews-Taylor of Amherst, age 96 on Thursday, Nov. 6th, 2014 at High-Crest Nursing Home, Springhill, NS. She was born in Amherst; the daughter of the late Frederick B. and Charlotte (Ibbitson) Gould.
She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Donna Matthews-Chappell (Barry), her son Bill (Sheila) Matthews, three grandchildren Andrew Chappell, Steven (Leah) Matthews, Jason (Jen) Matthews and five great-grandchildren, Brendan, Amy, Beth, Hannah and Lily, sister-in-law Betty (Gould) Muise as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Helen enjoyed sewing, crocheting, oil painting, baking, quilting, playing the accordion while Dad (Bert) played the violin years ago and reading. She was a member of the St. John Ambulance in the early years, Amherst Historic Society, Amherst Golden Years Society and CWL. In her early years she worked at Paul's Ladies Wear and later on at Gallant's Convenience Store.
Helen was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her first husband, Earl (Bert) Matthews and second husband, Basil N. Taylor.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the entire staff of High-Crest Nursing Home of Springhill for the wonderful care and love shown to Helen and all of us as a family.
Visitation will be held on Monday, November 17, 2014 from 12:00 – 1:30 p.m. at Campbell's Funeral Home (667-9906), 98 Church St., Amherst, with funeral service following at 2:00 p.m. from the Holy Family Roman Catholic Church with Father Vernon Driscoll officiating. Reception will follow in the parish hall and interment will take place in the St. Charles-Nativity Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Diabetic Society, Heart & Stroke Fund or the charity of your choice.
