CHANCE HARBOUR – It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joan Eileen Porter, age 58.
Joan passed away peacefully on November 2, 2014 at the QEII Hospital, VG Site.
Born April 21, 1956 in New Glasgow, Joan was the youngest child of the late Gladys (Grant) and Clarence Porter of Stellarton.
While a schoolgirl, Joan received two gold medals in Speech Arts and Drama from the Royal Conservatory in Toronto while attending classes with Ann Bartlett MacLeod. After the completion of her Instructor’s Certificate in Swimming and National Lifeguard designation, Joan became the Coordinator of the Gyro Swimming Program at Melmerby Beach for several years. Following her graduation from Stellarton High School, Joan attended Mount Allison University where she received a Bachelor of Arts (English) and a Bachelor of Education. She worked at Birks before enrolling in the Bachelor of Recreation program at Dalhousie University. Upon completing her degree, Joan returned to Stellarton as Recreation Director. During this time, she became the Race Director for the first Highland Challenge Triathlon at Melmerby Beach. A successful event, it has taken place for over 30 years. As well, Joan organized the first Master’s Swim Program at the YMCA. It continues to thrive in our community.
Joan changed her direction and began a teaching career in Halifax County before returning to Pictou County where she spent 30 years as an educator. In November 2012, Joan received the award, “Teachers Make a Difference”. It was awarded to teachers who made a difference in the lives of students through their compassion and inspiration. Joan was pleased to assist in community endeavours. She enjoyed her involvement with the Johnny Miles Marathon each spring.
Joan retired in June 2013 from North Nova Education Centre. A dedicated, conscientious and creative teacher, Joan has touched the lives of many students. We will remember Joan for her generous heart, indomitable spirit and steadfast determination. A loving and devoted daughter, mother, sister and friend, we have been blessed with Joan’s thoughtful and kind gestures.
Joan was predeceased by her brothers, David and Alan and her parents, Gladys and Clarence.
She leaves behind her sister Phyllis A. Porter-Baker (John Baker), and son, Christopher D’Eon.
With sincere and heartfelt thanks, we would like to express our appreciation to the friends and relatives who stood by Joan’s side during her illness.
At Joan’s request, there will be no funeral. Visitation will take place at H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Home, Stellarton, on Saturday, November 8 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A reception will be held on Sunday, November 16 at 2 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Express, Lawrence Boulevard, Stellarton.
