Rose Catherine (Balmas) Oursen

Born In: Sydney

Passed in: Sydney
Passed on: November 7th, 2014

It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that the family of Rose Catherine (Balmas) Oursen, age 82, announce her sudden passing on Nov. 7, 2014, Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Sydney, Rose was the daughter of late Frank and Catherine Balmas. She is survived by her husband and best friend of 64 years, Albert 'Abbie' Oursen; daughters, Cheryl (John) MacSween, Grand Falls-Windsor, Nfld., Debbie Johnston, Sydney, Donna (Alexander) Davis, Bedford, N.S., and son, Darren (Trina) Oursen, Regina, Sask., and brother Frank (late Patricia) Balmas, Sydney, as well as her 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Rose was predeceased by her parents and grandson, Shane Johnston.
Rose started her working career at Eaton’s in Sydney and retired as branch accountant for Central Trust, Sydney.
Rose will be remembered for her sense of humour and quick wit. Rose was “never late” according to her schedule. She had a shopping list of late excuses, which made perfect sense to her. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister and an avid Toronto Maple Leaf fan. Whenever Rose needed help, she called on her faithful St. Anthony. He always came through for her.
Rose was well-known in the bowling community for over 50 years – a member of the “400 Club” and Youth Bowling coach. One of her passions was dancing, her and Abbie would often dance the night away. She served on the Board of Directors of Club 55 and Sydney Pensioners Club.
The family would like to thank friends and neighbors, Mary Coffin and Bill MacIntosh for always being there for mom and dad. Also a special thanks to granddaughter-in-law, Kate Rigby, for her love and support through this difficult time. We would also like to thank the emergency medical and palliative care staff for the excellent care given to Mom.
Visitation will be Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2014, from 2–4 and 7-9 p.m., Chants Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, N.S. Funeral mass will be held Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2014, at 11 a.m., St. Marguerite Bourgeois Parish, Cabot Street, Sydney, N.S.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to palliative care or a charity of ones choice.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Chants Funeral Home.
