With great sadness we announce the passing of George Edgar Beckwith, 81, of Sydney on November 8th, 2014 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
George was born in Sydney on Dec. 26, 1932, the only son of the late Rhoda (Fraser) and John Harold 'Hal' Beckwith. He attended Sydney Academy and Mount Allison University. George was a branch manager for Beneficial Finance, first in Corner Brook, Nfld., and then for over 20 years in Sydney.
Active in civic life, George was a long term member of Rotary International, Philae Shriners and was a 32nd degree Mason. He served as president of the Rotary Club of Sydney in 1971 and was made a Paul Harris Fellow in recognition of his service to Rotary and the community. He was a former president of the Cape Breton chapters of the Nova Scotia Tuberculosis Association and the Multiple Sclerosis Society. He served on the Nova Scotia Workers Compensation Appeals Board for eight years. Although raised a Presbyterian, George played an active role in St. Andrews United Church.
Despite having significant health issues throughout his life, George had a passion for life and pursued a wide range of hobbies. An accomplished gardener, he also enjoyed hunting and fishing with friends, oil painting, stained glass artistry, golf, skiing and badminton. He was especially proud of his license to pilot recreational planes.
George is survived by his wife of 58 years, Alice (Ferguson); daughters, Julie (Gordon) Anderson of Sydney River, Jo Ann Beckwith and Jennifer Beckwith, both of Fall River, N.S. and three grandchildren, Julie's son, Kevin Anderson and Jennifer's daughters, Amy and Kelsey Prevost.
George was predeceased by his sister Jean Lochhead.
He is survived by his nieces Sara Lochhead, Hantsport, N.S., and Mary Lochhead, Winnipeg; cousins, George, Sandy and David Fraser of Southside Boulardarie and Mary (Fraser) Ryan of Baddeck and extended Beckwith family members in California.
As per George's wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or funeral. Interment will be at a later date.
Donations to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Nova Scotia are welcomed.
The family would like to extend its appreciation to Dr. John Archibald, Dr. Shimon, Dr. Ritter and the staffs of the ER, 4C, 3B, the IMCA, and the Palliative Care Unit for the care and compassion shown to George.
