It is with great sadness we announce the passing of John R.'Jack' Stagg, 93, who died peacefully surrounded by his family on Nov. 12, 2014.
Jack was born in North Sydney, Sept. 14, 1921, the son of the late William and Mildred (Davidge) Stagg.
Jack was a hardworking gentleman, and described his life as “one that was highly eventful”.
He cared deeply for his family, and his friends and took great pleasure in providing for those he loved. Jack was an eager worker and often held down many jobs at once. Some of which were delivering milk, 'hauling' coal, driving taxi with his brother Merv and owning a general store on the Gannon Road. In 1939, Jack spent four and a half years overseas in the war. During that time he drove ration and supply trucks and loved nothing more than sharing these vivid memories with others. Upon returning from the war, Jack spent 37 years on the railroad and retired happily from a job he loved most. Jack was a man of devout and unwavering faith who
derived much strength from his beliefs and regularly attended St. Giles Presbyterian Church where he was a member since 1938. He served as an Elder and loved to sing in the choir.
During later days spent at the cabin, Jack devoted his time to giving boat rides that were
legendary, chopping wood with unmatched resilience and every morning offering a tender greeting, warm fire and full pot of tea. Everything Jack did he did wholeheartedly. He was dedicated, faithful, strong, enthusiastic and above all else, loving. The lives of his family and friends will be forever blessed by the continuous care he provided.
Jack is survived by his son Kevin (Brenda), daughter Gail (Robert) both of North Sydney, his greatest joy were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, granddaughters Karen (Bruce), Ashley (Aimee) and Jillian (Rebecca). Also Kayla, niece by blood, granddaughter by heart, great-grandchildren Bronsen and Brighton, his sister Pearl and sister-in-law Lillian, both of Ontario and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Awaiting him in heaven are his wife Willena, mother and father, sisters, Ethel (George), Joyce (Jim), brothers, Garnet and Mervyn (Eileen) and David in infancy.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Giles Presbyterian Church with Rev. Ritchie Robinson officiating. Burial will take place at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
