John Parker

It is with immense sadness that the family of the late John James Parker announce his passing on Sunday, 16 November 2014 at the age of 80 years. He will be sadly missed by his son: John Parker of Ottawa , ON; daughter: Joanne Duhart (Tony) of Corner Brook, NL; daughter: Elizabeth Gilfoy (David) of Dartmouth, NS; grandchildren : Julian, Jacob, Tyler, Jordan, Brandon and Madison; Also survived by sister: Elizabeth Mobray, Hamilton, ON and a large circle of friends. He is predeceased by his wife Joan Sandra Parker, parents: Helen and John James Parker and his sister: Kay Meihm. John had a prestigious and rewarding career of 37 years in the RCMP. Born in Guelph, ON, his career brought him to Newfoundland where he met and settled with the love of his life Joan and raised his family. While in the RCMP, one of his favorite duties was providing security and protection to visiting dignitaries such as Pierre Trudeau, Prince Phillip, Fidel Castro, and Russian Leader Andrei Gromyko. John also served as SWAT Team commander organizing the response teams for critical incidences. John was heavily involved in many charitable organizations and was the founding president of the Rotary Club in Gander. John loved to travel the world, sport fish, hunt and gardening. He was raised on a farm in Ontario and inherited his father’s love for growing things, and was especially proud of his tomato plants. In his younger days, he enjoyed being part of the dart league at the Legion. He also participated in Curling for many years and proudly represented Newfoundland as Skip at the National RCMP Curling Tournament. The funeral service for John, which will include a memorial for his wife Joan, will take place on Friday, November 21, at 1:30 PM from Fillatres Funeral Chapel 4 St. Marks Avenue. As expressions of sympathy flowers are graciously accepted or donations may be made to the Salvation Army family services.
