Frederic, "Father Fred"  Hinxman

HINXMAN, Reverend Father Frederic William -(age 82) of Granville Centre, NS died peacefully Tuesday, November 11, 2014 in the Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born May 23, 1932 in Portland, Maine, he was the son of the late Leroy S. and Rachel (Messer) Hinxman. Fr. Fred attended Deering High School, Portland, Class of 1950. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy and served 4 years with the 6th Fleet aboard the Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. Coral Sea CVA-43. Discharged in 1954, he attended Portland Junior College and New England Institute of Funeral Directing and Mortuary Science in Boston, MA. Fr. Fred served 17 years as a Funeral Director in Boston MA, Augusta and Portland ME, 13 years with Jones and Rich Funeral Home. As a Funeral Director, he was a member of The Maine Funeral Directors and The National Funeral Directors Associations, the Portland J.C.’s, The Ralph Caldwell Post American Legion and Box 61 Portland Fire Buffs Club. In 1971, after attending the University of Maine in Portland, he and his family moved to Lexington, KY where he was a Postulant and Candidate for Holy Orders under Bishop Addison Hosea of Lexington and studied at the Episcopal Theological Seminary in Lexington, KY. He was ordained Deacon on June 1, 1974 by Bishop Hosea. He was admitted to the Diocese of NS in October 1974 by Archbishop William W. Davis and ordained Priest December 20, 1974 by Bishop George Arnold. Father Hinxman served as Rector of the Parishes of Port Dufferin (1974-1978), of Bridgetown (1978-1988), and of Aylesford and Berwick (1988-1995). He was Regional Dean of the Eastern Shore and served on the Program Committee and Sub-committee on Aging of the Diocese of NS. Fr. Fred was Padre Chaplain to the Berwick and District Volunteer Fire Department 1988-1992 and Honorary Padre to Royal Canadian Legion, Ortona Branch No. 69, Berwick and the Valley Health Hospital Pastoral Education Committee in Kentville. Fr. Fred retired to his home “Breezy Meadows” in Granville Center in 1995. During his retirement he served as Supply Priest to the Parishes of Annapolis, Granville, Rosette, Round Hill, Clementsport, Digby, Clements Deep Brook and Wilmot. He also served as Chaplain to the RCMP “H” Division, Annapolis District (West). He was a member and President of The Order of Good Cheer 2004-05. Fr. Fred had a keen interest in old cars and also enjoyed building models, belonging to the Annapolis Valley Modelers Society and the U.S.S. Coral Sea Association. He is survived by his wife Joanna Gay (Tschamler) Hinxman; four children, Kim MacQueen (David) and children Matt, Nick and Emily of Halifax NS; Krista Wright (Danny) and children Adam, Craig and David of Upper Clements, NS; Kurt Hinxman (Shelley) and children Kaitlyn, Hannah and Kevin of Victorville, CA and Kara Lang (Scott) and children Nathaniel and Sophia of Leavenworth, KS; nephew Alexander (Lauren) of Fairfax, CA. He was predeceased by brother Paul of Yountville, CA. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 2-4PM and 7-9PM Wednesday, November 26, 2014 in Middleton Funeral Home 398 Main Street, (902) 825-3448. A Memorial Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Thursday, November 27, 2014 at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Middleton, Bishop Ron Cutler officiating, followed by a committal at Holy Trinity Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Holy Trinity Church, Middleton or Primates World Relief and Development Fund c/o Holy Trinity Church. Arrangements have been entrusted to Middleton Funeral Home.
