Dorothy "Nan" Haley

HALEY, DOROTHY ANN "NAN" - The death of Dorothy Ann "Nan" Haley occurred November 22 at Rocmaura Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. She was in her 94th year. Her unique insights and sense of adventure will be missed. Nan was born and raised in Saint John, a daughter of Annie Roden and John Macmillan Trueman. She is survived by her daughter Peggy Belding Smith (Randie); granddaughters Dr. Rebecca Scott (Dr. Brad Muir) and Jodi Mueller (Joel); four great-grandchildren Nicholas Scott, Sydney Mueller and Cassidy and Anderson Muir; as well as her sister Virginia Balloch of Toronto. She also leaves three stepchildren Karen Field, Kent Haley and Martha Hosein. She was fond of her many nephews and nieces located in the United Kingdom and all across Canada. She was predeceased by her first husband Clifford Emerson Belding of Chance Harbour and their son Ian Gerald Belding, her second husband Frank Beckett Haley of St. Stephen, N.B., and siblings Stuart Trueman, Margaret Mullin, Ruth Fenety, Ian Trueman and Hugh Trueman. Nan began her office career with the Bank of Nova Scotia in Saint John, in the early 1940s and moved on to many interesting jobs in Montréal, Lennoxville, QC, and St. Andrews N.B. In Lennoxville, she was secretary to the Dean of Science at Bishop’s University prior to retiring to St. Andrews in 1971. In 1957, she and her young family sailed on the Empress of England, toured Europe and lived in England for several years. She was an avid bridge player and a Grand Master. Both of her husbands played bridge as well. She was an avid rug hooker, having completed over 25 rugs. Another great pleasure for her was her volunteer work at the St. Andrews Tourist Bureau. She was a member of All Saints Anglican Church in St. Andrews. Nan was always ready for a game of bridge or a picnic lunch along the way of a day’s excursion.
The funeral will be held Saturday, November 29, at the chapel of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), starting at 10 a.m. Following interment at Fernhill Cemetery, there will be refreshments at the funeral home.
