Lawrence Edward 'Larry' Spencer, 79, of Dartmouth, formerly of Bridgeport, Cape Breton, died peacefully, surrounded by family on Nov. 29, 2014, at Oceanview Continuing Care Centre, Eastern Passage.
Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late George and Mabel (Clark) Spencer.
Larry was a veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Centennial Branch 160, Main Street, Dartmouth.
Larry had an avid interest in harness racing, both as a horse owner and a fan, he loved watching the races. He was also a huge fan of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Sid the Kid and never missed watching a game.
After retiring from the military, Larry started his automobile sales career at Murdoch’s in Truro in 1959 and continued to work in the profession for over 40 years.
He will be sadly missed by his wife of 59 years, Dorothy (Thurrott); children, Della (Harold) Parker, PEI, Jocelyn Smith, Dartmouth, Robert (Mae) Spencer, Halifax, Holly (Dave) Thompson, New Minas, Tim (Valerie) Spencer, Sydney, Craig (Melanie) Spencer, Dartmouth, Rodney (Corinne) Spencer, Fall River; eight grandchildren, Sarah Smith-Saulnier, Adam Parker, Stacey (Shane) King, Jenna Thompson, Rebecca Spencer, Victoria Spencer, Ethan Spencer and Emily Spencer; two great-grandchildren, Damien and Olivia King; sisters, Rhoda Burns, Jeannie Spencer, both of New Waterford, Vangie (Ralph) Leck, Stewiacke; numerous nieces and nephews. He will also be dearly missed by his loving cat, Bosco.
He was predeceased by brothers, Trennie, Edward, Freeman and Raymond, sisters, Shirley Spencer (infant), Melissa Smith and Lena Spencer, son-in-law Kim Smith, grandson-in-law Evan Saulnier.
Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. Monday at Ettinger Funeral Home, 2812 Highway 2 Shubenacadie. A funeral service will be held at 3pm Tuesday at St. Andrew’s United Church, Stewiacke. The interment will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery, East Stewiacke. A reception will follow in the St. Andrew’s Church Hall.
Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia or Huntingtons Society Canada, Dartmouth Chapter.
Special thanks to the staff at Dartmouth General Hospital, 4th floor Transitional Care Unit and Dr. Nolan, Rev. Holly Edsall, Rev. Susan MacAlpine-Gillis, and the third and fourth floor staff at Oceanview who provided such compassionate care during the last few months.
