Catherine Marie 'Kay' Graham

Born In: New Waterford

Passed in: New Victoria
Passed on: November 29th, 2014

It is with great sadness that we the family announce the passing of our mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother Kay Graham on Nov. 29, 2014, at the Maple Hill Manor.
Born in New Victoria, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary (Beaton) Nearing.
Kay, a T.B. survivor was a very strong woman. She had left Cape Breton and was admitted into the Kentville sanitarium where she had spent some time in recovery. She had to leave her two girls at home which to her was heartbreaking. At the age of 36, she returned to Business College for two years. Kay was also an active member in the community, for 30 plus years she had run Buds Dairy with her husband on Plummer Avenue, worked at the Royal bank where she retired and was a former member of the Saint Agnes CWL.
Kay’s big heart allowed her to do anything for anyone. She supported a family in India for 30 years and was a woman of strong Catholic faith. She had many hobbies which included bingo, reading and knitting, making many mittens for the kids in the neighbourhood. The one thing that Kay took great pride in was being there for her family. She was devoted to her grandchildren Katrina and Lonita. In her later years, Kay had developed Alzheimer’s disease but even still that couldn’t keep the smile off her face and ruin her positive attitude.
Kay is survived by her daughter Leslie (Alan) O’Connell, New Waterford, son Scott (Linda) Graham, Lingan, grandchildre, Katarina (Allan) Corbett, Michael Roach and Lonita Graham, great-grandchildren, Ava Justine and Jace Alexander Corbett and aunt Katie Beaton. She is also survived by her sisters in-law, Joanne Nearing, Dolly Simms, Emma Gillis and Helen Graham and brothers in-law, Bernard Graham and Jack Patriquin, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by her loving husband Buddy, daughter Lonita, son Richard and brother Lonny Nearing.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 3 from 4-9 p.m and there will be a funeral mass on Thursday, Dec. 4 at 10 a.m in the Parish of Saint Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Reception to follow at the Parish hall, Convent Street. All are welcome. Cremation will take place and burial at a later date.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 862-7500.
Donations in Kay’s memory can be made to the Resident Trust, Maple Hill Manor.
