Mary Catherine 'Kay' Davidson

Passed in: New Waterford and Baddeck
Passed on: December 5th, 2014

It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Mary Catherine 'Kay' Davidson (nee Bruleigh) at the age of 84.
Kay was surrounded by her family when she passed away peacefully on Friday, Dec. 5, 2014 at Celtic Court in Sydney, where she received the ultimate care and friendship from the staff for the past five years of her life.
Kay is survived by her son Keith, his wife Janice (Nemis) and their children Jennifer Wiseman (James) and Steven (Kristin) and her son Kenneth, his wife Rose (Doucette) and their son, Brett (Brittany). She is also survived by her brothers Ken (Delores), Rev. Warren (Janice) and Rev. Ross (Jane).
Kay was predeceased by her loving husband, Douglas and her parents, Alva and Muriel (Robertson) Bruleigh.
Education was certainly one of Kay’s great passions. She became a teacher at the young age of 20 and started her career in New Waterford. While teaching, she continued her education by taking courses during many summer breaks and attending night classes, as well. Kay’s dedication to education continued when she had the opportunity to teach various courses to fellow teachers at UCCB (now CBU). Persistence and hard work enabled her to reach her goal of becoming a Principal and Central School was lucky to have her; a position she held for many years until the closing of the school. Kay then continued her Principalship at Thompkins Memorial School in Reserve, where she later retired after having a very fulfilling and successful career.
Kay was an active member of Calvin United Church and the UCW when she resided in New Waterford.
In her retirement years, she and Doug made Baddeck their permanent home. While in Baddeck, she continued her involvement with the church and quickly became a valued member of the Greenwood United Church. Volunteering for many charitable organizations was also something that Kay did regularly.
Kay’s leisure time consisted of baking, gardening, reading, walking and swimming in the beautiful Bras d’Or Lakes on their waterfront property. It was also a very popular spot for their children and grandchildren to visit in the summers.
In honour of Kay’s wishes, cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral service will be held at Calvin United Church in New Waterford on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2014, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. A luncheon will be held in the Rev. Duncan Roach Fellowship room immediately after the service with burial to follow in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia or a charity of one’s choice.
Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
