Joseph Neil MacNeil, 81, of Grass Cove, Victoria County, N.S. passed away peacefully on Dec. 4, 2014, at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck, N.S. surrounded by family following a brief illness.
'Joseph Neil' was born in Grass Cove, the son of James J.D. MacNeil and Lucy MacNeil. He was a lifetime member of St. Columba parish, Iona, N.S. and a former member of the Iona Volunteer Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 54 years, Jean Marie (MacDonald) and his children Hector, Thad (Anne), Burlington, Ont., John (Rhonda), Medicine Hat, Alt., Mary Lou (Hugh R. MacNeil), Benacadie, N.S., Gordon (Susan), Truro, N.S., and Joanne (George MacKinnon), Whycocomagh, N.S. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Greg, Sean, Kaylee, Ryan, Breton, James, Cameron, Daniel, Breagh, and Tyler; his brothers, John C. (Columba), Sydney Mines, N.S. and Duncan, Grass Cove, N.S. and their wives (both also named Jean!); one niece and seven nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and a brother in infancy as well as his son Stephen.
'Joseph Neil' spent most of his working life with Canadian National Railways, starting out on the 'extra gang' and for nearly 30 years was a bridge tender at Grand Narrows, N.S. He retired from CN in 1992 but later returned to work for a number of years with the Cape Breton & Central Nova Scotia Railway, which had taken over operation of the local rail line from CN.
The family would like to extend a very special 'Thank You' to the doctors, nurses, and staff at VCMH for the tender and compassionate care Joseph (and the rest of the family) received during his illness.
At Joseph’s request, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9 at St. Columba parish, Iona, N.S. followed by a mass of Christian Burial with Fr. Paul Abbass officiating at 11 a.m.
