Mr. Roy Young, of Georges River, N.S., passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2014.
Born in Sydney Mines, Cape Breton, he was the son of the late Daniel R. and Elizabeth J. (Redmond) Young.
In his younger years, Roy worked in the coal mines in Sydney Mines and Cape Breton Dairy, before joining the Sydney City Police Department, where he began his career as a constable on the beat in Whitney Pier, a community that he grew to love. Roy rose in the ranks over his 40 year tenure to corporal, sergeant, and was the inspector in charge of major crimes when he retired. From 1944-1946, he served with the Cape Breton Highlanders, was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12, Sydney, the Retired Police Association and past exalted ruler of the Elks 270, in Sydney.
Roy is survived by many family and friends who love him and will miss him very much.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Basil Young and Ambrose Young.
A funeral service will be celebrated at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, Dec. 16, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Bill Burke officiating. Interment will be held at a later date. Following the service, a reception, with the family, will be held on the lower level of the funeral home.
As expressions of sympathy, memorials to the SPCA or any charity of choice would be appreciated by the family.
