Passed in: Glace Bay
Passed on: December 12th, 2014

It is with heartfelt sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of John Malcolm MacKinnon, 63, on Friday, Dec. 12, 2014, at the Glace Bay Hospital, with his family at his side, after a brief courageous battle with cancer. His trip out of this world, as we know it was peaceful and he fought his disease to the end with grace and without complaint. We are very proud of him for sure and he will be sorely and forever missed.
Born in Glace Bay, John was the son of the late Daniel Joseph 'Curly Joe' and Jean (Ferguson) MacKinnon.
He is survived by one sister, Barbara (Alexander) MacClure, Sydney and brother, Robert (Mary Margaret) MacKinnon, Albert Bridge, also survived by his niece and nephews.
He was a graduate of Morrison High and the Marconi Campus of advanced learning completing his studies as a mine surveyor with a special aptitude for math and drafting.
John, although quiet by nature, still seemed to have a large affect on everyone fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed and forever loved.
John enjoyed a varied working career beginning as a truck driver, mine surveyor, roughneck on various drill floors in western Canada; he was a commercial fisherman for over 30 years and earned an offshore masters ticket helping to run family fishing and diving operations from several Nova Scotia harbours including Main-a-Dieu, Louisbourg, Shelburne, Yarmouth Bar, Dingwall and East Dover among many others.
John was an avid reader and loved books. He also spent many hours on the water both fresh and salt having a strong love for sport fishing. He could tie flies and passed many peaceful hours fly fishing in Margaree and especially Middle River. His love of music brought great comfort especially the songs of Neil young. John had a great love for all animals and a deep respect for nature but more so for dogs.
There will be no visitation, Cremation has taken place under the direction of Patten Funeral Home, Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, Dec. 17 at 11 a.m. in Knox United Church with Rev. John Finlayson officiating. Burial to follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
The family would like to extend thanks to all friends and family, whose love and support made dark days a little brighter. To Dr.Gallivan, the nurses, doctors and staff of the Cancer Center, Palliative Care, VON, and staff of the third floor west wing at Glace Bay Hospital, whose care and compassion made living with and treating the illness, a little easier. This helped make John’s wish to spend most of his final days at home, a reality.
