Harvey T. Ross

Born In: New Waterford

Passed in: River Ryan
Passed on: December 13th, 2014

It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Harvey Ross, 77, of River Ryan on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014, at home.
Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late Tom and Agnes (Corrigan) Ross.
Harvey was a member of Calvin United Church, New Waterford. He worked for 34 years in numerous coal mines throughout the area as a mechanic, draggerman, and ropesman, retiring from Phalen in 1989. Harvey was in #12 and #26 mines during the explosions and was instrumental in the rescue operations as well as the eventual sealing off of the mines.
In earlier years, he enjoyed hunting and the CB radio where he was known as 'The Ugly Fox'. In more recent years, Harvey loved fishing his favourite spots in Cape Breton which he kept a secret from most people. He was also a handyman and was often called upon to make cupboards for various friends and family. A true 'Ford' man, he always had a car or truck of that make which he loved to drive. Harvey was an avid swimmer and would hold in-house competitions to see who would be the first one in the pool before summer, and the last one out in the fall. He usually won and it's noted that family and friends would see him in the pool at a time when there were no leaves on the trees.
A man who enjoyed family above all, including his dog, Patti, they dubbed him 'The Mayor of River Ryan' who always had a task on hand for them to help see it through. He will be thoroughly missed by all who knew him.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Jackie (MacDonald); son Billy Ross (Agnes); daughter Marilyn (Danny) Kalbhenn, all of River Ryan; brothers, Robert (Betty) Ross, Tom (Jeannette) Ross, both of New Waterford; grandchildren, Andrew (Theresa) Kalbhenn, Edmonton, Eric Kalbhenn, Rebecca Ross, Aaron Ross, all of River Ryan; several nieces and nephews.
Harvey was predeceased by both parents.
Visitation will be held Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral service will take place Thursday, Dec. 18, at 11 a.m. in Calvin United Church, New Waterford, with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Cremation will follow. A luncheon will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall immediately after the funeral service.
Donations in his memory may be made to a charity of one's choice.
Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
