Valmond Surette

SURETTE, VALMOND - We are saddened to announce the passing of Valmond "Val" Surette, 82, formerly of Moncton, on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at the Villa Providence in Shediac following a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s. Born on February 1, 1932 in Moncton, NB, he was the son of the late Jean-Baptiste and Geneviève (Bastarache) Surette. Valmond was a peaceful, gentle and giving man who was loved by his family and those who knew him. He was a past employee with Sears for 20 years, and also played the violin at Le Pays de la Sagouine in Bouctouche for approximately 14 years. A gifted musician, he played many instruments but excelled at playing the violin and the saxophone. Val also enjoyed playing music with his musical brothers: Roger, Clarence and Odule. He played in numerous local bands: ‘Val and the Nitehawks’ and ‘Roland et ses Musiciens’, just to name a few. For most of his life, Val joyfully volunteered his musical talents to bring the gift of his lively and touching music to many local nursing homes, hospitals and churches. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1310. He will be sadly missed by all but especially by Frances née McCarthy, his beloved wife of 57 years, and their two children: Denis (Ailen) and Monique Surette.; his brothers and sisters: Odule Surette (Sally), Alfreda (late Jean-Paul) Léger, Roger (Stella) Surette, Simone (Ronny) Léger, Clarence (Ethel) Surette; several nieces and nephews. He is also predeceased by his step-mother, Yvonne (Despres) Surette.
The family will receive condolences at the Frenette Funeral Centre, 88 Church Street, Moncton (858-1900) Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm, and Saturday from 9:30 am until departure (10:15). The funeral mass will be celebrated at Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix Roman Catholic Church, 87 Murphy Avenue, Moncton, Saturday, December 20 at 10:30 am. Interment will be in Fair Haven Memorial Gardens, Moncton. In memory of Val, a contribution to the Alzheimer Society would be appreciated. www.frenettefuneralhome.com
