It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, Gramps, brother, and Uncle Ronald 'Rannie' Currie on Dec.17, 2014, surrounded by his loving family at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Beaver Cove, Cape Breton. He was the son of the late Michael and Mary Catherine (MacMullan) Currie. Rannie worked in the floral business for a number of years before beginning his 41-year career as a jeweller. Rannie continued to have his hand in the floral industry throughout his life.
Rannie was known as a strong volunteer in his community through many avenues. He was a member of the Sydney Kinsmen, Crime Stoppers, St. Theresa’s Folk Choir and was also a 4th degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus (Coady Council 9476).
His most enjoyable moments came from spending time with his fishing buddies (brother, Peter, brother-in-law, Coke Bonaparte, John Dickie, and Huck Buckland). He always looked forward to lunch hour with his dinner partner and brother Herbie every day. Rannie also enjoyed the company of his good friend Donnie Beaton, his walking buddy, Ron Hanrahan, and his many square-dancing friends throughout Cape Breton. An avid square dancer, and jokester, Rannie’s favorite word was YES, yes to anyone who asked for a hand, or help in anyway – no matter who they were.
He is survived by his loving wife, the former Lucy Bonaparte, of 43 years; his two sons, Jason (Jill) of Ontario, and Shaun (Justine) of Sydney, and Gramps pride and joy, his beautiful grandson, Reid Ronald Jason. Also survived by his brothers, Peter (Lorraine), John Thomas 'Tom' (Jo-Anne), Gerard (Kaye), Herbert 'Herbie' (Heather) and sisters, Ann Marie (John) 'Sonny' Leslie, Jeannine (John) MacLean; sisters-in-law; Annette Currie, Sydney, Barbara, Ontario; brother-in-law Jim Gardiner; sister-in-law, Patricia 'Tish' MacKillop (David); brothers-in-law, Mike (Donna), John 'Coke' (Charlene), and Greg (Lisa) Bonaparte. Also surviving are his very special friend, and better known as “his girlfriend”, mother-in-law, Mary Bonaparte. Rannie also leaves behind, and will be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, who all cherished him dearly.
He was predeceased by brothers, Michael and Donald; his sister, Mary Gardiner; three brothers in infancy and father-in-law, Seward Bonaparte.
Visitation will be Friday, Dec. 19th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at TW Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Theresa’s Church with Rev. Jim Oliver officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Rosary Parish Cemetery in Westmount.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to doctors: Phil Smith, John Jenson, and Trevor Guy, nurses, and staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, the VON, and the palliative care for the care and kindness during Rannie’s illness.
