Hazel Lorraine Latimer

Born In: Yarmouth, Canada

Passed in: Sydney River, Canada
Passed on: December 22nd, 2014

It is with deep sadness and broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Hazel Lorraine Latimer on Monday, Dec. 22, 2014, at her home in Sydney River.
Born in Yarmouth, she was the daughter of the late Alex and Edna LeBlanc and stepmother, Alice.
She was predeceased by her loving husband of 54 years, Nelson Latimer.
She was a devoted and loving mother who is survived by her five children, son Wayne (Muriel), and daughters, Jody (Joe) Flynn, Karen (Mark) Drisdelle, Tamara (Tracy Riley) and Lori-Anne (Jason) Merlin. She will be greatly missed by her 11 grandchildren, Devon, Jessica and Emily Latimer; Meaghan (Trevor) Mossman, Aaron and Alyssa Flynn; Brittany, Tyler and Jordan Drisdelle; Ethan and Chase Merlin. She is survived by her sister Marilyn (Mrs. Bernard Prefontaine). Also surviving are many loved nieces and nephews. She will be sorrowfully missed by her many, many friends.
She was predeceased by sisters, Jeanette McGuinty and Marjorie LeBlanc and brothers, Victor and Carl LeBlanc.
She was a member of St. George’s Anglican Church and Saint Anthony Daniel Church.
Hazel worked as a teacher for over 25 years starting her career as a weaving instructor with the Province of Nova Scotia where she was one of the first to weave the Nova Scotia tartan. She worked as a French teacher with the Cape Breton Regional School Board. After her “retirement” she started her second career as a volunteer for the Atlantic Cruise Ship Services, the CNIB, Big Brothers & Big Sisters and the CWL (50-year member). She was a founding member of the Run for the Cure, volunteer co-ordinator for the ECMAs, and a volunteer for many years with the Every Woman’s Centre where she actively participated in both the Back to School and the Adopt-a-Family Programs. Her volunteer work is an example of her selflessness and giving spirit. She had a passion for influencing community members, family, and friends in a positive way.
She was quoted as saying: “I have been enriched in life and have been blessed with a good life. I have great faith in people and God. I know that strength comes from within and regardless of the road block, you just need the strength to move it. I know that I have been blessed with my soul mate, Nelson!”
The last thing we would like people to remember about Hazel is her beautiful smile that lit up every room she entered and that will continue to light up the sky.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Friday, Dec. 26, 2014, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at the Church of Christ the King at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2014, with Rev. Laura McCue officiating.
