It is with very heavy hearts that we, the family of Shirley MacKeigan announce her passing on Dec. 22, 2014.
Raised in (Bridgeport) Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Fred Lynk and Alma Clarke.
In her younger years she worked at the General Instrument Plant in Sydney, Cape Breton University as a cleaner and Victoria Haven Nursing Home. Later in life she served as a bartender for Row Street A.C. where she was also a member of the ladies auxiliary.
Shirley had a great love for her entire family. She loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren dearly. She cared for her loving husband in there home for many years. Shirley was a mother to many children some of whom were not her own.
Anyone who knew Shirley was drawn to her by her loving smile, kindness and humour. She enjoyed many things in life, darts, curling, bowling, dancing. She enjoyed playing the spoons and spending hours on her CB Radio, her handle being The Iona Queen. Her greatest joy in life was her second home, her cabin in Red Point, Iona, where she met lifetime friends, Pat and Charlie Fry and James MacNeil.
Shirley is survived by her loving children, Shirley (Richard) McInnis, Florence Feaver, Colleen (Kerry) Caines, Cheryl (Stanley) Rideout, Junior (Ann Marie), Billy, Eddie (Bernadette), Kenny (Donna) and Keith. Also surviving are her siblings, Aggie, Delie, Tootsie, Lila, Mary (Joe), Truman (Marie), Jerry (Shelley), 19 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Robert, son-in-law, Ritchie Feaver, daughter-in-law, Ruth Lynk-McIsaac, sister, Helen and brothers, Everett, Sam, Bernie and Norm.
Family would like to thank doctors & staff of the Glace Bay General Hospital, staff of Taigh Na Mara, VON Dr. Ley and Dr. Creighton.
Visitation for Shirley will be held on Friday, Dec. 26, 2014, from 2-4 and 7-9 in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral services For Shirley will be held on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2014, in Warden United Church at 2 p.m. with Lay Minister, Martha MacDonald officiating. Burial in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Reception to follow at Row Street, A.C., Bridgeport.
Donations in memory of Shirley may be made to the Alzheimer’ Society or the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
Shirley will be taken to the church at noontime on Saturday.
