It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, Bruce Ferguson, on Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2014, at the Northside General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the youngest child of the late William and Margaret Ferguson.
Bruce worked for many years as a meat cutter for R. Jabalee & Sons. His interest then turned to law enforcement where he spent 38 years of service between the North Sydney Police Department and the Cape Breton Regional Police Service retiring in 2008.
Bruce was an avid bowler and a proud member of the 400 Club. His other interests included time spent with his extended family at their summer home in Bras d’Or, drives with his son, following his grandchildren’s hockey tournaments, dance competitions and listening to his daughter sing.
Bruce spent many years working for the benefit and welfare of autistic children, first as a member and eventually as president of the Nova Scotia Society for Autistic Children.
Bruce was a member of St. Matthew Wesley United Church.
He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Yvonne (Amey) Ferguson; his daughter, Lisa (David) Penny North Sydney; by his sons, Ken Ferguson of North Sydney and John (Anita) Pickup of Musquodobit; by his grandchildren, Kiersten, Taylor and Michael Penny and Laura Pickup. Also surviving are his brother Bill (Betty) Ferguson of Sydney Mines, his sister Dru MacPhee-Potter of Fall River and by many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Donald (Bernice), Rod (Gladys), Gordon (Betty) and George (Alma), as well as his sisters, Christine (Mike) MacNeil, Peggy (Sandy) MacLeod, Anna (Danny) Lewis and June (Jack) Evans.
Visitation for Bruce will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28 in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A Celebration of Life will be held Monday, Dec. 29, 2014, at 2 p.m. at St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney with Rev. Nick Phillips officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to the Autistic Society of Nova Scotia (Cape Breton Chapter) in his memory.
