It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary Rose Gould on Dec. 24, 2014 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Noel and Mary Belle (Paul) Johnson.
Mary was a loving mother who loved all her children the same. She was a devoted catholic, who traveled the pilgrimage to Saint Anne de Beaupre in Quebec each year as well as the Mission Chapel Island. Mary enjoyed many things, some of her favorite things include baking for family and friends, playing Bingo, traveling, and people in general. She was a skilled basket maker who taught many people the skill of basket making. She was a great storyteller who shared her stories and journeys of her life with others, especially during Pow wow’s.
She is survived by children, Janet (John) Takata, Toronto, Ont., Sydney John (Gloria), Eskasoni, Susan Margaret (Peter) Paul, Membertou, Joanne Poulette, Eskasoni, Sugar ‘Madeline’ (Walter)Poulette, Eskasoni, Mary Estelle Gould, Membertou, Marie Bella Gould, Membertou, June Margaret Frances, Membertou, Adam Gould, Membertou, Oscar Gould, Halifax, Bertram Gould, Eskasoni; sister, Katherine Sorbey; daughter-in-law, Sandy Gould, Membertou; 75 grandchildren, 136 great-grandchildren and 95 great-great-grandchildren; godchildren, Laurianne Paul and Cloud Paul.
She was predeceased by husband, Joseph Gould; sons, James, Francis, Milton; daughter, Frances Battiste; sisters, Mary Paul, Margaret Morris, Edna Paul, Mary (Lalo) Paul, Isabel Bernard, Theresa Julian, Harriet Doyle, Maryanne Battiste; brothers, John, Benjamin, Theodore ‘Teddy’and John Battiste; godchildren, Gregory Johnson and Carly Gould.
Visitation will begin after 5 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 1 at 61 MicMac Cres., Membertou. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015 at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Parish (St. Joseph’s Church), Cabot Street, Sydney with Fr. Martin MacDougall officiating. Interment in Holy Cross Cemetery, Sydney.
