SMITH, Stuart Glenn – age 78, of Melbourne, formerly of Truro, passed away on December 31, 2014 at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital, Yarmouth. Born on April 13, 1936 in Sackville, New Brunswick, he was a son of the late Adelia (Noiles) Smith. Stuart graduated from Sackville High in New Brunswick in 1954. He received his B.Sc. (Physics) 1958, Mount Allison University and M.Sc. (Physics) 1970, University of Windsor. He was a Research Assistant from 1958 to 1960 at UNB. He trained as an Armament Officer, R.C.A.F.; commissioned as a Pilot Officer, 1958. 1960 – 1964 – Research and development Engineer at E.M.I. Cossor Electronics, Dartmouth. This position entailed work on many projects. Theoretical studies of underwater behavior of sonobouys dropped from aircraft. Sea trials of oblique ionospheric sounding equipment. This project was carried out aboard the U.S.S. Forrestal off the eastern coast of the U.S. and aboard the U.S.S. Norfolk while circumnavigating South America. 1964 – Lecturer and now Assistant Professor of Physics at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College, Truro. He instructed in Physics and Mathematics for science and engineering students up to third year College level. He was a chairman of Disciplinary Committee and Judicial Committee. During these years he was several times President of the 102 Wing R.C.A.F.A. in Truro and involved with the R.C.A.F.A. Benevolent Fund Committee. On January 1992, he completed a CASARA Search Coordination Course. Following his love of flying he pursued his private pilot examination and soloed much to his delight. He was a chartered member of CASARA Debert. He is survived by his loving wife, Rachel (Boudreau) Smith; daughter; Rene (Smith) Gould; son; Bruce (Liz) Smith; grandsons; Taryn Gould and Jeremy Smith; granddaughter, Erin Gould; also 6 cousins dispersed in the USA, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. He was predeceased by grandparents, Blanche (Robinson) and Stanley Noiles; aunts, Inie (Charlie) Milton, Ferol (Clarence) Taylor; uncle, Earl Noiles; granddaughter, Rebecca Mona Adelia Smith. He sadly missed his talking cat of 17 years, Oakley. Funeral arrangements were under the care and direction of H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth where a visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Sunday, January 4 with prayers at 8 p.m. A funeral mass was held at 11 a.m. Monday from Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Melbourne, Father Gerald David officiated. An interment was held in the parish cemetery following the mass. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Gilles Boudreau and Friends Cancer Help Fund.
