With sadness deep in our hearts we regret to announce the sudden passing of our loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Frederick Morley Prendergast. Fred passed away peacefully, Jan. 1, 2015, at Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Sydney River, where he resided for the last few years.
Born in Port Morien, he was the son of the late George and Alice (Burke) Prendergast, and was a long time resident of Donkin and Marconi Towers. Fred was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Port Morien, but he frequently attended mass at St. Gregory’s in Donkin.
Fred will be remembered as a genuine family man, a devoted Catholic and as a member of Branch 5 Royal Canadian Legion, Donkin. He began his working career driving a truck, then worked on the railroad, but the majority of his working years (almost 30), were spent as a machine operator at the Fortress of Louisbourg.
Fred is survived by his sons, Dennis (Karen), Donkin; Gregory (Nancy), Sydney; John (Sheila), Marconi Towers; sister, Alice Dearn, Port Caledonia; grandchildren, Carey (Alexis), Morley, Michelle, Ryan, Jessica, Cara, Kristina; great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Nathan and Riley. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and friends.
Besides his parents, Fred was also predeceased by his loving wife, Christene (Holman); sister, Susan Nearing; brothers, John, Patrick, George, Thomas, Dennis and Michael.
In honouring Fred’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Sunday, Jan. 4, 2015, from 7-9 p.m. at V. J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass, celebrating Fred’s life will be held 11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 5, 2015, at St. Mary’s Church, Port Morien with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating. Interment will immediately follow in St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery, Black Brook. A reception will follow in the Port Morien Fire Hall, where everyone is invited to share a cup of tea, a light lunch and stories with the Prendergast family.
Family flowers only. Donations in Fred’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
Special thanks to the staff of Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Spanish Bay wing.
