Jim Anderson

Passed on: December 16th, 2014

James Alan Anderson passed away peacefully on December 16, 2014, at the Cabri Prairie Health Care Centre, lovingly surrounded by his family. The memorial service was held at 11:00 a.m. on December 22, 2014 from the Cabri Legion Hall with Reverend Salesi Takau officiating. The pianist was Lexi Culham, soloist was Jennie Anderson, the eulogy was read by Ed Olsgard, and the ushers were Ron Kaake and Corey Baldwin. The interment service will be held at the Cabri Community Cemetery at a later date. Jim was born in Cabri, SK on January 4, 1934 to Stewart and Florence Anderson. It was an extremely cold winter and the living conditions were not good for a newborn. The family was kindly invited to share the home of a local farmer by the name of Alf Turk. In time, Stewart purchased the land from Mr. Turk, and that land is still held in the Anderson family. Jim attended Sandford Dene School for grades one through ten and completed grade 11 in Cabri. Many of his school friends remained friends through his entire life. On July 23, 1955 Jim married Gladys Cora Thompson and they celebrated 59 years together before Gladys passed away in September of 2014. They joyfully raised five children: Gayle, Gary, Randy, Joanne, and Patricia. Jim was a loyal and loving husband to Gladys, and the best father to his children. They all knew they were loved and always enjoyed spending time with their dad. Not only did Jim and Gladys build their own home, they helped their children with many construction projects over they years. His devotion to Gladys was admirable as he cared for her at home for a number of years during her struggle with Huntington's Disease. When she was admitted to the Cabri Prairie Health Care Centre, he visited her on a regular basis, often to feed her meals or just to sit and visit. Jim was born to the farming life and one of his proudest accomplishments was purchasing his own half section of land in 1953. Eventually the farm grew and in partnership with his son Randy, it became Clayhill Farms, named after the farm in Scotland once owned by Jim's grandfather, William Clark. He must have taken great pride that four of his children were involved in farming in one way or another. Jim was thrilled to receive an acknowledgement from the Canadian Wheat Board for his 50 years in farming. As a sideline to farming, Jim drove school bus for Hazlet School for 17 years and worked on Range Land Reclamation for eight years. For a number of years he helped Gladys operate the Café in Hazlet. He loved his horses and long dreamed of owning a ranch one day. Jim enjoyed tinkering on his vintage tractors and still had the original 15/30 McCormick bought by Alf Turk and Grampa Stewart. Working on these vintage vehicles kept him busy even in the winter in the shop and maybe helped to keep him out of Gladys's kitchen, unless he wanted fudge, which he took great pride in making, even though it never really turned out! Jim believed very much in giving back to his community and over the years more than contributed his fair share. He did this quietly, without a great deal of fanfare and by example. He was a delegate for the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool for 21 years and served as a Director for six years. For as many years as we can remember he was a member of the Cabri Lions Club, eventually earning a lifetime membership of which he was very proud. He went on to serve as District Governor for the Lions Club and that allowed him and Gladys an opportunity to not only travel to many of the local Saskatchewan clubs, but also Denver and Taipai. They loved Taipai and enjoyed many fond memories of that trip and the people. Over the years, Jim was an RM Counsellor for the Pittville Municipality, belonged to the Mason Lodge in Cabri, served on the church board for the United Church in Hazlet, helped out with the Hazlet Elk's Baseball team and the school in Hazlet. He was always ready and willing to lend a hand to friends and family and helped out with many other local organizations such as the Seniors Hall in Cabri at bingo and many other events. He provided a good ear and solid advice for the local young farmers coming up behind him. At an early age Jim learned to play cribbage and it was very common sight to see him enjoy a game with family. Jim and Gladys were always up for a game of cards, attending Lion's functions and spending time with friends camping, visiting, or playing games. A highlight for Jim was seeing Carol Baker live in concert and getting a hug from her. Jim and Gladys enjoyed trips to Hawaii and Scotland and he would have loved one more trip back there to visit his family roots. Jim was predeceased by his wife Gladys Cora; parents Stewart and Florence Anderson; sister Jean (Art) Brooks; parents-in-law Russell and Ena Thompson; brothers-in-law Ron Bingham, Alan Thompson, and Roy (Hilma) Thompson; sisters-in-law Marjorie (Lloyd) Leader, Doreen Thompson, Hazel (Sam) Ivanitz, and Sharon Thompson. Jim is survived by his sister Mary Bingham; brother-in-law Jerry Thompson; sister-in-law Viola (Len) Schaan; his children Gayle (Ed) Olsgard, Gary (Peggy) Anderson, Randy (Hazel) Anderson, Joanne (Miles) Anderson, and Patricia (Tom) Shannon; grandchildren Chris (Michelle) Olsgard, Jenelle (Bill) Bennington, Travis (Jennie) Anderson, Kenton (Janelle) Anderson, Nick (Cassie) Anderson, Jeremy Anderson, Chelsea (Byron) Weedon, Alyson Anderson, Kalese Shannon, and Wesley Shannon; Jim had 18 great grandchildren, many of who lived close enough for "Grampa Great" to see often and those who lived further away all got a visit to welcome them into the world. He only missed seeing one great granddaughter born in the last year, but was able to meet the newest grandbaby before passing. Jim was cared for by the staff at the Cabri Health Care Centre for the last weeks of his life. As with Gladys, we once again were able to witness the loving care the staff provides for everyone. We will never able to adequately thank all the staff who now only cared for Jim but also cared enough to make our lives so much easier during his time there. We also want to thank those lifelong friends of Jim, who took the time to visit and provide comfort during the past year as he battled with cancer. Donations in Jim's memory may be made to the Cabri Lions Club. Warren's Funeral Home were entrusted with the arrangements.
