KATHLEEN (KAY) OWENS
1914 – 2015
The family of Kay Owens (Newman) is saddened to announce her passing on January 3, 2015. She had celebrated her 100th Birthday on October 12, 2014 with all of her family. Kay enjoyed a long and interesting life and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. Kay grew up on a farm along the Trans-Canada Highway west of Belle Plaine. After completing her last 2 years of high school at Central Collegiate in Moose Jaw, Kay attended the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon for 1 year. She completed her education at Moose Jaw Teachers College in 1934. Her first teaching position was at Gapview School near Arcola, where she taught for 3 years, followed by 2 years at Petrolia School. While there, Kay met Eldon Owens, a local mixed farmer, who also had an abiding interest in education, and they married in September 1939. Kay and Eldon enjoyed life on the farm and participated in all activities of a small community. During their 53 years together they raised their family of 3 sons and a daughter. Their sons remain Petrolia residents. Kay joined the United Church at the age of 13 and was a Life Member of UCW. Kay not only enjoyed community activities, but because of Petrolia’s proximity to Moose Jaw, she became involved in organizations and programs in the city. During her long life, she was an active participant in many organizations, among them the Petrolia Tea Timer Club; the Moose Jaw and District Old Timer’s Association; the Moose Jaw Agricultural Society; Zion United Church; Lindale School Senior Oratory, where Kay proudly made 42 presentations of the Owens Oratory Cup, and Lindale School Square Dance group. She was acknowledged by her community on many occasions, including for her contributions to the Tea Timers in 1981, Moose Jaw Farmer of the Year in 1990, the Saskatchewan 125 medal in 1992 and the Saskatchewan Centennial Medal in 2005. Kay considered her most interesting and rewarding hobby the writing of 40 years (1970 to 2010) of “Petrolia Connection” books, recording persons or events with any connection to the community and articles focused on district. The books are stored at the home of Garry and Elaine Owens in the Petrolia district. In Kay’s words: “Just a small way of giving back to the community” that was her home for 56 years. Kay was predeceased by her husband Eldon in 1992; her parents William and Leota Newman; her brother Bill and his wife Marjorie of the Belle Plaine district; her brother Charles and his son, Robert of London, ON; her sister Vera Reddaway of Portland, OR; her sister and brother-in-law Irma and Gordon Eves of Moose Jaw and her sister Marilyn Kjarsgaard of Surrey, BC. Kay is survived by 4 children, 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. They are son Garry (Elaine) and their family: Shawna (Dwayne) Bullock of Grande Prairie AB, their children Crystal (Cam) Sitek and their daughter Isabel Sitek; Charla (Matt) Hunter; and Rebecca Bullock, all of Grand Prairie; Rory of Saskatoon; and Derek (Danielle Sicinski) and their daughter Emilie Owens of Moose Jaw; son Darol (Linda) and their family: Barbara (Shayne Hogeboom) and their daughters Kaylee and Abby Hogeboom of Moose Jaw district; Robert (Angela Carr) of Calgary AB and his daughter Taylor Kell of Moose Jaw district; Roger (Kenda) and their children Kayce and Marley Owens of Moose Jaw; daughter Jolyn (Leon) Brin of Regina and their family: Jody (Dale) Diakow and their sons Nicholas and Noel Diakow of Saskatoon; Danielle Millar and her daughters Erin and Megan Millar of Port Coquitlam, BC; Jared (Ashley Spires) of Delta, BC and his children Malcolm and Neala Brin of Birch Hills, SK; and son Garnet (Beverley) and their family: Kathleen (Steven Harvey) and their sons Austin and Kale Harvey of Moose Jaw; Margaret of Moose Jaw.
