Douglas William Courage

Passed in: Whitney Pier
Passed on: January 8th, 2015

Doug died suddenly Thursday, Jan. 8, 2015, at the age of 58 after a brief illness.
After graduating from Sydney Academy in 1975, Doug put his natural skills as a handyman and carpenter to work on various projects around Sydney. In 1978 he started with the Sydney Steel Corporation working in the coke ovens, blast furnace, universal mill and electric arc furnace where he broke in as furnace operator.
After the plant closed in 2000, Doug worked steadily for the various companies that evolved at the old plant site for the next 10 years. During his working years, Doug loved to play baseball with the boys and enjoyed the 'after game celebrations." In recent years, being a home body, Doug was busy with his interests in gardening, genealogy and doing projects around the house. His last project was to build a home-made passive solar heater of his own design. He also liked to make occasional visits to family cottages in Indian Brook.
He is survived by brothers, Donnie (Rose) Courage, Sydney, Darrell (Jocelyn) Courage, Bedford; sister Cathy Courage, Sydney; nieces, Julianna and Marianna Courage, Bedford; nephew Tim (Nicole) Courage, Ingonish; great nephews, Callum and Finnley, Ingonish. He is also survived by a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.
Doug was predeceased by his parents William and Alice (Slade) Courage.
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. this evening in the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home. 564 Alexandra Street. Memorial service will take place 11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel.
