Passed in: North Sydney
Passed on: January 11th, 2015

George Thomas Standing, 64, died peacefully at home on Jan. 11, 2015, after a brief illness. His final days were spent in the cheer and company of family and close friends, and he passed with his family by his side.
George was born June 20, 1950, at St. Elizabeth Hospital, North Sydney, to William Ward and Cora Ella (MacDonald) Standing.
After graduating from Thompson High School, he enjoyed a career with the Canadian National Railway, repairing rail networks and bridges across Canada and instructing courses, until he retired in 2004. He was an associate member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 19 and member of the Royal Albert Masonic Lodge #19 in North Sydney.
George loved to work with his hands and he was generous with his time and skill. He was as well known for his reliability as "construction foreman" on home renovation projects as he was for refusing to loan his tools. If you needed his chainsaw, you got George with it, as well as his instruction for how to use it, followed by his help loading the debris into his favourite truck, with which he would promptly haul your mess to the dump for you.
After his father Ward's death in 1988, George became a devoted caregiver and best friend to his mother, Cora. Apart from their varied social activities, they enjoyed discovering new baking recipes, playing salsa bingo and going for drives together. They were rarely apart and his mother will miss him dearly.
George was predeceased by his father, Ward, and many aunts and uncles in North Sydney and Burgeo, Newfoundland.
He is survived by his mother, Cora, North Sydney; brothers and their spouses, Bill (Jane), Prince Edward Island; Garland (Donna), North Sydney; and his six nieces and nephews — of whom he was boastfully proud: Donald (Vivian Hayward) Standing, Prince Edward Island; Derek (Jamie) Standing, Alberta; Amanda Standing, Prince Edward Island; Kori (Christian) Brown, British Columbia; Megan (Jordan) MacLeod, New Brunswick; and, Erin (Christopher) MacDonald, Sydney Mines. He especially loved the time he spent watching movies and playing cars with his great-nieces and nephews, Ethan and Sofia; Alexandra and Racquel; and, Ceilidh and Lachlan. He is also survived by special aunt, Annie MacDonald and many cousins in North Sydney and throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
Special thank you to neighbours David, Phil, John and Ann, and to Claudette, his palliative care nurse, who brought George and his family much comfort.
George will be waked today and this evening at W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St. in North Sydney from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. There will be a Masonic service tonight at 7:15 p.m. at the funeral home.
George's funeral will take place Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 3 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Glen Kent officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall.
Memorial donations may be made to the Cape Breton District Health Authority Palliative Care Service or to St. John the Baptist Anglican Church.
