Michael "Mike" Schmitt

Michael "Mike" Cairns Schmitt, 44, of Bible Hill passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Saturday January 10, 2015 at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre.
Mike was born on December 2, 1970 in Pictou, Nova Scotia. He was the son of Margaret (Henderson) Schmitt and the late Lothar Schmitt.
Survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Karyn MacKinnon; their children Julia Schmitt, Brody Schmitt, and Brayden Schmitt. Mother Margie, sisters Linda (David) Charbonneau (Hammonds Plains), Tanya (Scott) Boone (Yellowknife). Parents-in-law, Jim and Elaine MacKinnon (Truro); and sister-in-law, Jill (Koko) Gillis (Guelph); several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents John Cairns and Bertha (Lowden) Henderson; paternal grandparents Heinrich and Berta Schmitt of Germany; father Lothar and an infant brother John Mark.
Mike worked as Operations Manager for the Tim Hortons Warehouse in Debert for 20 years. He was valued and respected by his staff and coworkers. Mike thought highly of his Tims team and cared for them as family. Mike was a dedicated husband and father, he put everyone's needs around him ahead of his own, even on days he wasn't feeling well. Mike lived every moment for his family. His children were his life, he was over the moon proud of his children and their accomplishments. Mike spent a short time in the Palliative Care unit, but everyone there heard plenty about his children. Mike was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer Spring of 2013, just a few weeks before his diagnosis their Golden Retriever, Jersey, joined the family. Jersey's arrival thought to be poor timing turned out to be the best thing possible for the entire family. Jersey was Mike's loyal companion, never leaving his side. Mike was passionate about hockey, whether that be coaching or watching. Mike's family will have forever memories of watching Bruins games with him as he yelled or cheered at his team. Mike leaves a void not only with his family, but with the community, the players and his hockey families. Mike loved coaching minor hockey and gave countless hours to the sport. He believed in making players better people not just better hockey players. He always gave his players the respect they gave him. Mike's sons have a special quote for their dad from their favorite movie "The Sandlot"... "Heroes get remembered, but Legends never die."
The family wishes to thank some extraordinary people for their support and care over the past 18 months; VON's Marilyn MacKeen and Michelle Maillet; Raj Makkar; his special ladies of the chemo unit, Dr. Michael Murray's office and the staff of Bible Hill Village Pharmacy. Special thanks to Dr. Smith and Dr. Rowe, the Palliative Care and Hospice team for their genuine sincere care given.
In honoring Mike's wishes, there will be no visitation. Funeral service will be held 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 17th at the Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro with Rev. Glenn MacLean officiating.
Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to an education trust fund set up at the Scotiabank "Schmitt Children's Trust"
