Kenneth Orville (KO) Braaten, 88, of Saskatoon SK, passed away peacefully at St. Paul’s Hospital on Monday January 12th, 2015. Born in Moose Jaw, SK to Hagbart (Bert) and Borghild Braaten, he lived most of his life in Moose Jaw before moving to Saskatoon in 2004. It was in Saskatoon that 51 years previously, he had fallen in love with and married his wife, Mona Joy (nee Johnsrude).
Kenneth completed his Bachelor of Education at the University of Saskatchewan and his Masters of Education at the University of British Columbia. He started his 37 year educational career in British Columbia in a one room school house where he was both teacher and principal. He was a lifelong educator in the Moose Jaw school system, including principalships at both Central Collegiate and Riverview Collegiate, retiring in 1983. Ken was an active Rotarian for many years, as well as sang in the Male Choir at Zion United Church. Kenneth was passionate about many things, including art, music, sports and spending time with friends and family.
Ken’s three children, son Stephen (wife Dana), daughter Cheryl (husband Owen) and daughter Melanie (husband Stephen) will always think of him as the quintessential teacher, confidante and their number one fan. His grandchildren Lauren and Eric Fowler, and Ehvan and Julia Parrott have many treasured moments by which to remember Papa. Preceded by oldest brother Harry, and brother William, he is survived by older brother Art of Burnaby B.C. and sister Pearl Brown of Victoria B.C. as well as many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Kenneth’s family would like to extend a warm invitation to friends and family to assist them in celebrating this incredible man’s life, on Friday, January 16th , from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at W.A. Edwards Family Centre, 333 4th Ave N Saskatoon. Complimentary parking will be provided at the Saskatoon Funeral Home which is located directly across 4th Ave. Arrangements are entrusted to Saskatoon Funeral Home (306) 244-5577.
Memorial donations may be made in Kenneth’s name to the charity of your choice.
