SMITH, Robert Stuart, 76, of Woodlawn Drive, passed in Yarmouth Regional Hospital on Tuesday, January 13, 2015. Born September 30, 1938 in LaChine, Quebec, he was a son of the late Carl and Jessie (Sisk) Smith. Robert was a certified engineering technologist. He completed the studies and examination requirements of a structural engineering course. He worked on Housing Developments in Montreal with the Miller Corporation. He also took a course in architecture. He completed a course in geology at the University of British Columbia. He was an ardent geologist and worked at Brunswick Mining and Smelting. He completed a course at Humber College in Toronto in computer programming and trained many in Nova Scotia in the use of computers. He was an avid skier and enjoyed the cold climate of Northern New Brunswick. He was an accomplished musician. He loved to play the clarinet, saxophone, fife, drums, banjo, guitar, flute and mouth organ. He wrote “Demon Rum” for Roger Whittaker which sold more than a million copies. Many of his songs found new life in his nephew, Robbie, who is currently touring the USA. Robert was a poet and wrote many books of poetry and the Queen greatly enjoyed reading his work. He was a special kind of man. He took lessons in combat judo and received a belt in karate from the R.C.M.P. He was an avid curler. He loved swimming in the undersea world and admired Jacques Cousteau. His greatest joy was the summers he spent with his family in the Laurentian Mountains, north of Montreal. Robert loved his dog, Fumph. He is survived by his brother, Carl Smith, sister Annie Smith and nephew Robbie, all of Shelburne County. He was predeceased by his parents and sister, Leona Smith. Cremation has taken place under the direction of H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Shelburne. No visitation by request. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
