Kersi Davar

KERSI, S. DAVAR - 1923 - 2015 - The family of Kersi Davar is sad to announce his passing Wednesday night, January 14, at the ripe old age of 91. He is survived by his wife Anji, and sons Celes, Zal and Gudarz and their families. Kersi and family made Fredericton home in 1960, when he joined the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the University of New Brunswick. Kersi was instrumental in the faculty becoming a breeding ground for generations of experts on water resources studies, river hydraulics and hydrology. He was a many-time recipient of Professor of the Year recognition and was widely respected by all his peers. He was one of the first academics in Canada to focus on River Ice Science and Engineering. In addition to having the Committee on River Ice and the Environment’s Davar Medal created in his honour, and being its first recipient in 2009, Dr. Davar received the Distinguished Service Award from the Canadian Water Resources Association in 1991. This award recognized his outstanding contributions to development and management of water resources in Canada, in particular for establishing and chairing the Subcommittee on Hydraulics of Ice Covered Rivers which ultimately evolved into the Committee on River Ice Processes and the Environment (CRIPE). Dr. Davar was also recognized by the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering in 2002 for contributions to the advancement of hydrotechnical engineering in Atlantic Canada. His family can testify to his commitment to his craft – he spent hours preparing for each and every lecture, each and every year until his retirement in 1990. His loves away from work included his family, his roses and his classic music LPs. He will be missed by his family, friends and colleagues who all know he led a full life.
A reception and visitation will be held Sunday January 18, at McAdam’s Funeral Home 160 York St, from 2 to 4 PM.
