It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Norma 'Alice' (MacQueen) Vokey, 65, of Glace Bay, N.S. on Jan. 15, 2015, with loving family at her side, after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer.
Born in Glace Bay on July 10, 1949, Alice was the daughter of the late James and Margaret (Harn) MacQueen.
She is survived by her husband, Jerry Vokey, to whom she was married for nearly 44 years; a daughter, Nadine Lavoie (Adrien) of Hollis, N.H. and a son, Jared Vokey (Danielle Owen) of Grand Mira, N.S.; grandchildren, Maggie, Audrey, and John; brothers, Robert (Marilyn), Jack (Elaine), and George (Annie); several sister and brother in-laws; aunts, an uncle, many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
As a registered nurse for 42 years, Alice began her career in the Pediatric Department of the Old Glace Bay General Hospital and retired as head nurse of the Long Term Care Unit 4 North of the Glace Bay Hospital.
Alice enjoyed music, walking, and following baseball, basketball and hockey. She loved the simple things in life. Family was always first.
At Alice's request cremation has taken place. Visitation will occur on Monday Jan. 19, 2015 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2015, 2 p.m. at Warden United Church, Glace Bay officiated by Lay Minister Martha MacDonald.
Memorials can be made to support Ovarian Cancer Research, the Kidney Foundation, or Warden United Church.
