Johnston, Gary Norman Johnston, age 61, of Hazlet, SK, passed away January 7, 2015 at Hazlet. The Memorial Service was held at 10:00 am Thursday, January 15, 2015 from the Hazlet Community Hall with Carola Anderson officiating. Honorary Pallbearers were the members of the Lions Club and all who shared in Gary's life. The interment service took place at Bestville Cemetery, in the Hazlet District. Gary is survived by his wife Carolyn of 32 years; daughter Denise (Kyle), Stefanie (Brent), Stacie (Garth); son Jared (Jade) and grandchildren Chase and Karly and Brent's Children James and Jaidden; his mother Lillian Johnston; sisters Marilyn (David) Williams and Julie Bassen; aunts and uncles Dorothy and Archie McIvor, Jean and Gordon Johnston, Bob Johnston and Zelma Johnston as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father Norman Johnston, and grandparents Albert and Mabel Johnston and Fred and Nellie Korlack. Gary was born on January 9, 1953 in Cabri, SK to Lillian and Norman Johnston, an older brother to Marilyn and Julie. He attended school in Hazlet and graduated in 1971. He married Carolyn Krause on November 27, 1982 in Swift Current at the First United Church. Gary worked at a gas station in Banff, AB following high school and then in the oilfield to save money for a trip to Europe. Additionally, Gary worked for the Gull Lake School Division; as well as Halliburton, but spent most of his years farming with his dad Norman. His last job was working for the R. M. of Pittville, which he really enjoyed since there was never any talk of retirement. Gary was an active member of the Hazlet Lions Club, S.A.F.E. and taught hunter safety for many years. He also was a volunteer fire fighter and spent time as a first responder. He sat on the Hazlet Park Board, Sask Wheat Pool and the Rink Board, as well as acting for several years with the Sandhill Players. Gary loved travelling, and visited Europe, Morocco, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Chile. Panama and most recently Cuba. In his early 20's, Gary had a motorcycle and rode around Canada and the United States. He enjoyed camping with his family every August long weekend and he enjoyed gardening, taking great pride in his tomatoes. He played several sports during his life, baseball with the Roseray Eagles, hockey, skiing, curling, and fishing. Gary was a very sociable, as he loved to visit everybody to see how they were doing. His favorite part of life was his grandchildren, coming to watch them play sports, school functions and taking them for sleepovers. He had a passion for sci-fi movies and was looking forward to watching the new Hobbit film series. He wasn't the main cook of the house, but he was famous for his rice pudding, Johnny cake and potato pancakes. He will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by his family and friends.
