Joan Steeves

STEEVES, MARY JOAN - Mary Joan Steeves, 90, of Moncton, passed away peacefully at The Moncton Hospital on Monday, January 19, 2015. Born in Campbellton, she was the youngest of two daughters of the late Charles Homer and Jessie Maude (Cummings) Matthews. Joan moved to Moncton during her high school years and was a graduate of Moncton High and Success Business College. She worked for Central Trust Co. and United Food and Commercial Workers. In 1952, Joan and Win moved to West St., Moncton, a wonderful safe family neighborhood with lots of children. Their door was always open. She and Win enjoyed several trips to Europe where she took great interest in the history, culture and people of the countries they visited. She was a member of St. John’s United Church and the UCW, as well as the Legion Ladies Auxiliary, the NB NDP (Provincial Secretary in the 1960’s), Moncton Curlers Association (Women’s and Mixed curling) and was a Director on the Board of Co-operative Farm Services. Her hobbies included bowling, ceramics, reading, crossword puzzles, crocheting and knitting and she became known as the “Mitten Lady”, proud to donate 100 pairs of mittens yearly to local schools. Joan was a mother, mentor and motivator and we will miss her dearly. Mother of Donald “Gary” Steeves (Marina Horvath) of Pender Island, BC, Shelly Steeves (late Art LeFort) and Bonnie Steeves, both of Moncton. Loving grandmother to Jennifer Kelly (Ray) and great grandmother (GNan) to Sarah and (GG) to Megan; sister-in-law, Gloria Steeves; her nieces and nephews and extended family members, as well as the “cousins brunch group”. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Winston “Win” Bannerman Steeves (2001) and sister, Margaret “Lois” Matthews (2006); sisters-in-law, Dorothy Steeves, Vie Ayles and Jeanette Steeves, as well as brothers-in-law, Harold Stanford “Stan” Steeves, Elton “Ike” Steeves and Donald “Donnie” Steeves.
