Carolyn Sutherland

The death of Carolyn Elizabeth Sutherland age 73 of Amherst and formerly of River Hebert occurred Monday, January 19, 2015 at Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Upper Nappan surrounded by the love of her family. Born in River Hebert, she was a daughter of the late Clarence “Shine” and Georgeana (Melanson) Richard. Carolyn was very community minded which led to her volunteering with many community groups in River Hebert, including Girl Guides, River Hebert Fire Department Auxiliary and St. Paul The Apostle CWL where she coordinated many functions. She opened her home as a Foster Parent providing a safe environment for over 30 children and at risk youth for over a 15 year period. She was also known as “Mom” to many others. Carolyn was employed as a Support Counsellor at Autumn House in Amherst for 15 years, retiring in 2012. She is survived by her children Stephen (Beth) of Spryfield, NS, James (Ann) of Dartmouth, NS, Barbara Degenstein, Christine (Girvan) Dunlop and Nancy (Steve) Boudreau all of Amherst, 9 grandchildren Jennifer, Laura, Brandon, Nick, Allie, Damian, Clare, Clarence and Natalie, sisters Gloria, Sylvia, Jeanne and Joan, brothers Bernard “Butch” and Larry and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 from 7 -9 p.m. in Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst, NS. (902-667-9906) Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, River Hebert with Father Phil Thibodeau (Officiant) and Father Vernon Driscoll. Interment will take place in the spring in St. Denis Cemetery, Minudie. At Carolyn’s request please do not send flowers, instead memorial donations in her memory may be made to the Amherst Food Assistance Network or the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
