Dorothy M. White passed away peacefully on Jan. 19, 2015, at Harbourstone Enhanced Care Nursing Home, Sydney where she resided.
Born in Glace Bay in 1913, she was the daughter of the late William Edward and Mary (Foran) Verner of Highland Street.
After receiving her early education at Glace Bay Central School, she went into training at the New Waterford General Hospital School of Nursing, graduating as RN in 1935. Soon after she married William (Bill) White and became a lifelong resident of New Victoria and a member of St. Joseph’s parish. In 1968, she returned to nursing in the pediatric ward of the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital, retiring in 1978. After her husband’s passing, she continued to live in her own home until the age of 90, at which time she took up residence with her son and daughter in-law Greg and Pauline in New Victoria.
Due to declining health, she then transferred to Victoria Haven Nursing Home, Glace Bay in July 2011 where she remained until her move to Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Sydney in March 2012. On July 11, 2013 she celebrated a special milestone in her life — her 100th birthday — with most of her family in attendance.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter Doreen (Bob Brown), Dartmouth; two sons, Ray (Hilda), New Waterford, and Greg (Pauline), New Victoria; six grandchildren, Blair, Darryl, Eddie, Lorne, Leeanne and Lindsay; five great-grandchildren, Alexandrea, James, Carly, Belle and Evan; and one sister Anita Morrison, Antigonish.
Her husband Bill predeceased her in 1981. Along with her parents, she is also predeceased by half-siblings, Joe Verner and Susan (Verner) O’Connell; two brothers, Charles Verner and Earl Verner; sisters, Flossie MacNeil, Allie Connors, Margie Verner, Millie Hiltz, Mary Verner, Martha Verner in infancy; and one great-granddaughter Mallory Dawn in infancy.
There will be no visitation. A celebration of Dorothy’s life will be conducted at the Mclellan Brothers Chapel by Deacon Leo Penny on Friday, Jan. 23, 2015 at 2 p.m. Burial will be held in St. Alphonsus Cemetery, followed by a reception at the KOC, Plummer Avenue. All are welcome.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 862-7500.
