HOOD, Ruth Marguerite, Age 98, of Yarmouth, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2015 at Treasured Memories in Yarmouth with family members at her side. Born Oct. 5, 1916 in Bear River, Annapolis County, she was the daughter of Walter and Susan (Pulley) Morine. She was a registered nurse, graduating from the Yarmouth School of Nursing in 1938. She worked with the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON), and at the Yarmouth Hospital. She married Clifford Hood in 1939 and devoted herself to raising a family. They were always the main focus of her life. When she retired from nursing in the 1960's, she joined her husband in running Hoods Ltd., the family’s jewelry store. She was an accomplished silversmith and seamstress. An award-winning potter, she taught pottery for the New Start program. Pottery was a hobby shared with her husband who prepared the clay, which they dug from hillside outcroppings at Whale Cove, Digby County and along the banks of Bear River. She loved gardening and, until the end, her windows were filled with African violets. She was a devoted member of Beacon United Church. She is survived by sons Clifford (Joan), John (Nancy), Yarmouth; Robert (Liana), Wellington; daughters Susan (Harold) Blackadar, Oakville, Ontario; Elizabeth (Lloyd) Hood Shields, Stony Plain, Alberta; Belle (Fred) Hatfield, Yarmouth; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by sisters Margaret, Louise; a brother, Harry; two grandchildren. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Yarmouth where visitation took place Friday, Jan. 30 from 7-9 p.m. Funeral was at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31 at Beacon United Church, Rev. Sharon Lohnes officiated. Reception followed at the church hall. Family flowers only.
