It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, Margaret Genevieve 'Gen' Howley on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015, at the Northside Community Guest Home, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Florence, Oct. 14, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Gladys (LeBlanc) Walker.
She and Gordon, her loving husband of 60 years, were well-known residents of Bras d’Or for many years until recently, when staying in her own home was no longer possible, she began to be lovingly cared for by the staff of the Northside Guest Home.
Gen was often called upon by family as well as members of the community, to search through her daily diary that she kept since 1953, to confirm birthdays, anniversaries and past events with precise accuracy. She was a devoted member of St. Joseph Church in Bras d’Or, a lifetime member of the CWL, an avid card player and an active member of the Bras d’Or Senior Citizens and Pensioners Club.
Gen is survived by her two daughters, Gloria (Remi) Boutilier of Boularderie and Eileen (Keith) Robicheau of Bras d’Or, by her two sons, Walter (Lynn) of Fredericton, N.B. and Reg (Phyllis) of Bras d’Or, by her son-in-law George Landry of River Bourgeois, her 10 grandchildren, Karen, Gordie, Tracey, Gerry, Jennifer, Lisa, Darren, Sherry, Shannon, Richard; by her 11 great-grandchildren, Jase, Lynden, Sarah, Logan, Haley, Alex, Katie, Ivey, Noah, Ellie, Harper, by her two sisters, Vera McMullin of Florence, Greta (Mike) Prokopchuk of Brampton, Ont. and by several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Gordon Howley, her daughter Sandra Landry and three brothers, Wendell, Cyril and Joseph.
Visitation for Gen will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass will take place 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Joseph Church in Bras d’Or with Rev. Peter McLeod officiating. Burial will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery North Sydney at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the Northside Community Guest Home.
