Michael Powaschuk
1958-2015
On Tuesday, January 13, 2015, Michael Powaschuk (Mad Mike), late of Ross River, Yukon, passed away peacefully at Calgary Foothills Medical Center with his family by his side. Mike was born in Swift Current, SK on September 19, 1958.He was predeceased by his parents Jim and Cecile (St. Jean). He is survived by his sons Trevor (Tanya) and Scott Seibel and daughter Angela Brady (David); grandchildren Jesse, Tyler, David, Shantelle, Emma, Olivia and Austin; brothers Anthony, Daniel (Line Mercier) and Christopher (Sylvie Monette) as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Mike had a passion for the outdoors and he first realized this when he began trapping as a young man in Bone Creek Valley near Carmichael, SK, with permission of the Bakken family. In 1981, after visiting the Yukon as a tourist, Mike made it his goal to return there someday and in 1985, he left the Saskatchewan oil fields to work as a Miner in the Yukon. It was there that Mike pursued his passion for all things outdoors, with trapping topping the list, followed closely by hunting and fishing. His skill and success in the back country was recognized by all his peers. Mike intensely loved the land and respected it. Only his job occasionally got in the way of his pursuit of the outdoors. There was no money in what he did, but he did it because he loved it. Mad Mike’s crowning achievement was becoming a character in ‘The Colorful Five Percent’ and being an accomplished mountain man. His success in life is immeasurable. Mike was a man of many hats who liked people and enjoyed helping others. He loved his community of Ross River and, over the years, served it in many ways. In 1987, he became Fire Chief of Ross River and held that role for nearly 30 years. Having served in the Army Reserves before moving to the Yukon, Mike also found his place in Ross River leading the local reservist regiment of Canadian Rangers, as a Sergeant, and enjoyed the opportunity to serve his country that way. Mike was a man of honor and integrity. He was liked by most, but loved by anyone he let into his heart. He extended his home and his heart to many people across the Yukon and the world. If Mike counted you among his friends, you were truly a lucky person. Mad Mike, as he liked to be called in the Yukon, will be deeply missed by family and friends. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at 1p.m. at Christ the Redeemer Roman Catholic Parish in Swift Current, SK. A celebration of life will also take place at his home in Ross River, YT on July 11, 2015 (details to be announced at a later date). Messages of condolences can be sent by email to RIPMadMike@gmail.com or by regular mail to P.O. Box 10, Ross River, Yukon, Y0B 1S0. Flowers are gratefully declined.
