Msgr. John R. Campbell, Priest of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth, died in Halifax on Monday, Feb. 2, 2015.
Born in Iowa, USA, in 1922, son of late Angus Roderick and Jessie Maud (Scott) Campbell, he received his early education at Colchester County Academy, Truro; completed undergraduate studies at Saint Mary’s University, and theology at Holy Heart Seminary, all in Halifax. Msgr. Campbell was ordained to priesthood by Most Rev. J. T. McNally in 1946 at Holy Heart Seminary. Msgr. Campbell served as assistant priest in the Halifax parishes of St. Mary’s Cathedral and St. Joseph’s; St. Charles, Amherst; St. Joseph’s Kentville; St. Theresa’s, Hamilton in Bermuda and Immaculate Conception, Truro. He was Pastor at St. Peter’s, Sheet Harbour; St. Charles, Amherst; St. Peter’s, Dartmouth; St. Agnes, Halifax and St. Bridget’s, Shubenacadie from where he retired in December 1993. He also served as financial administrator at St. Michael’s Halifax. Msgr. Campbell served as a consultor for the Archdiocese, as Vicar General (1980-1990) and was elected administrator of the Archdiocese in November 1990, a position which he held until the new bishop was appointed in 1991. In his retirement, he lived at St. Agnes and St. Peter’s Rectories, and Parkstone Enhanced Care.
Msgr. Campbell is survived by cousins, Mary Katherine Lokken, B.C., William Scott, Fredericton and Pius Campbell, Iona.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Rev. Donald S. Campbell.
Visitation will be in St. Peter’s Church, Maple Steet, Dartmouth, on Wednesday, Feb. 4th from 2:30-5 p.m., followed by the Evening Prayer Vigil at 7 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated in St. Peter’s at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5th, Archbishop Anthony Mancini presiding. A reception will follow. Committal will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth.
Funeral arrangements are in the care of the Dartmouth Funeral Home.
