Kenneth Smith "Ken" MacLean

MacLEAN, Kenneth Smith “Ken” – 85, Truro, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 6, 2015, at home. Born December 2, 1929, he was the only son of the late Kenneth and Clarice (Patterson) MacLean. Ken attended the one-room school in Durham until 1944. He graduated from New Glasgow High in 1947 and then went on to Dalhousie University, graduating in 1950 with a BSc in Chemistry. A year later, he went on to MacDonald College of McGill, obtaining his MSc in soil chemistry in 1954. He was employed with Nova Scotia Research Foundation in Truro as a Research Chemist for 16 years and then as Professor of Chemistry for 19 years at Nova Scotia Agricultural College, from where he retired. Ken was a member of St. James Presbyterian Church where he served on Session and Board of Managers. He was also a member of St. James Male Chorus, senior choir, St. James Men’s Club and a former member of Truro Novatones. Ken is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Frances Claire (Fraser); daughters, Margaret MacLean, Bible Hill; Janet (Kelly) Wilmot, Truro; granddaughter, Jennifer; grandsons, Robert, Jonathan, Brett; nine great grandchildren; sister, Joan Quirt, Ottawa; two nieces. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his grandson, Michael. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Ken’s family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Sunday, February 8, 2015. Funeral service will be held 2:30 p.m., Monday, February 9, 2015, at St. James Presbyterian Church, 725 Prince Street, Truro, Reverend Dr. David Sutherland officiating. Reception will follow in the church hall. Spring interment in Durham Cemetery. Family flowers only. If so desired, donations in Ken’s memory to a charity of choice are welcomed.
