Gerald ‘Boots’ McNeil, a former resident of 8th Street, New Aberdeen, passed away peacefully on Friday, Feb. 6, 2015, at Taigh Na Mara Nursing Home, Glace Bay with his family by his side.
Born in Glace Bay, Gerald was the son of the late Russell and Annie (Walsh) McNeil.
Growing up in Cape Breton, Gerald was a devout Catholic and a member of the former St. John’s Church, Glace Bay. He loved playing and listening to fiddle music. He was a veteran of the Second World War. Gerald was a member of RCL, Branch 3, Glace Bay and a former member of RCL, Branch 125, New Aberdeen where he served in several executive positions. Gerald worked as a coal miner in No. 20 and 1B collieries until his retirement. He was a longtime member of the former C.B. Radio Club, New Aberdeen.
Gerald is survived by his children, Fr. Harold, Ottawa, Geraldine Phillips, Glace Bay, Eileen (Wayne Axworthy), North Winslow, P.E.I., Barbara (Gregory Shea), Glace Bay, Monica (Lawson MacDonald), Glace Bay, Rose C. (Archie Gillis), Bedford, N.S., Louise, Calgary, Barry (Daria), Sydney; 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; his sister, Theresa Schlosser, Ontario as well as several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Gerald was predeceased by his wife, Julia (Mercer) McNeil, twin brother, John Harold, brother, Bill, son-in-law, Stevie Phillips, brother-in-law, Al Schlosser and a sister-in-law, Eileen (Addicott) McNeil.
Visitation will be held tonight, Monday from 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass, officiated by Fr. Norman MacPhee is Tuesday, 11 a.m. in Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay followed by a reception in the parish hall. Interment in the parish cemetery at a later date. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion are asked to form an honour guard at the church in memory of their fallen comrade.
Family flowers only. If so desired, donations in Gerald’s memory may be made to the CAPE (Formerly Brass Tacks).
