MacKINNON, JOHN
It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our dear father, John A. MacKinnon “Big John” (Former Police Sgt.), age 95, on Monday, February 9, 2015 at his home. Born in Whitney Pier, Cape Breton, NS, John was the youngest child, and only son of Catherine (MacGillivary) and John E. MacKinnon.
John was educated at Holy Redeemer School and joined the Royal Canadian Army at age 16. Mr. MacKinnon was immediately Commissioned overseas with the beginning of World War II, and served for five years as a Sergeant in many parts of Europe. John was stationed mainly in Belgium, France, Holland and Germany. Upon returning home, John joined the Amherst Police Dept., where he completed a 35 year career of exemplary service, as a Police Sergeant.
John was a kind and gentle police officer, but he also commanded respect and admiration from the Amherst citizens and his peers. He was a policeman that had empathy for others, and he always used his social skills to assist others in difficult legal situations. Mr. MacKinnon was active in the Royal Canadian Legion and was past President of Branch No. 10 where he had been elected for several terms. John was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, as a 3rd degree knight.
John is survived by his two daughters, Susanne (Don) MacVicar of Moncton, NB, Christine (Peter) Maxner of Falmouth, NS; four grandchildren; four great grandchildren; two nephews, Alex (Juanita) Rolls and John (Diane) Rolls both of Sydney, NS. A special note to granddaughter, Janice MacVicar for all her support and extra visits.
Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his wife Irene (LeBlanc) and his eldest daughter, Charlene Arseneau; as well as his sisters, Annabelle (Sam) Rolls and Sophie English.
As per his wishes, Mr. MacKinnon has been cremated and there will be no public services. A private prayer service will be held at a later date with Father Allison Carroll officiating. Interment will take place beside his wife at a later date in the St. Charles-Nativity Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mr. MacKinnon’s memory may be made to the Canadian Arthritis Society.
