COX, Olive Marie – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother and great-grandmother at home in Shelburne surrounded by her family on Monday, February 9, 2015 at the age of 96. She was born in Lower Ohio, Shelburne County on June 19, 1918 to Lila and Clifford Harris and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Upon graduating from Provincial Normal College in 1937 Olive began her teaching career in Victoria Beach, Annapolis County. The following year she accepted a teaching post in Middle Ohio, Shelburne County, riding her bicycle nine miles a day to the one-room schoolhouse, such as the one in which she had received her early education. Respected by her pupils and admired by their parents, Olive taught several hundred children in the County and Town of Shelburne during the course of her 30 year career. She was a great inspiration to her young students as evidenced by their many fond recollections of time spent in her classroom. Her teaching career was interrupted during the Second World War when she joined the Wartime Prices and Trades Board in Halifax. In 1945 with the War over and her future husband, William “Bill” Cox of Shelburne, discharged of his military duties in the Royal Canadian Navy, she returned to Shelburne and they were married later that year. Olive was a busy mother and teacher in the years that followed but was also very active in her church and community. At Christ Church she was a lifetime member of the ACW, a choir member until the age of 85 and the first female warden of the church. She was a long-time member of the Roseway Hospital Auxiliary and the Shelburne Historical Society’s Craft Group and served as county coordinator for the NS Kidney Foundation’s annual fundraising campaign. She and Bill were part of the original volunteer component of the Meals on Wheels program in the town and were still making deliveries when they both were well into their 90’s. Olive was caring and compassionate throughout her life. She opened her home to her extended family and was her grandmother’s caregiver for several years. She took a keen interest in all her grandchildren and was actively involved in the daily lives of those who lived near her. She supported her husband’s first great retirement adventure which was to sail down the MacKenzie River from Hay River to Tuktoyaktuk, NWT in a boat which he built especially for the voyage. The trip was a great success with both learning much about life in the North and making many acquaintances along the way. Olive was predeceased by her parents and sisters, Helen Stoddard, Evelyn Bower and Lillian Atkinson, brother Herbert Harris, half-brother Douglas Harris and half-sister Pearl Harris. She is survived by her husband, Bill and children, Joanne Hayman (Alan), Nancy Cox, William (Bill) Cox Jr. and Ronald Cox (Beverly), ten grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Homes and Crematorium and there will be no visitation by request of the family. A memorial service will take place at Christ Anglican Church on March 7, 2015 at 2:00 pm, officiated by Rev. Ed Trevors, with a reception to follow at the Anglican Church Hall. The family wishes to extend its many thanks to Dr. John Keeler and to Olive’s caregivers for their excellent support. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Christ Church, Shelburne or to the Nova Scotia Kidney Foundation. On-line condolences may be sent to: hmhuskilson@ns.aliantzinc.ca or you may sign the guest book at: www.huskilson.net
