Joseph "Henri" Légaré

LÉGARÉ, JOSEPH EUGENE HENRI
After a long illness, the passing of Joseph Eugene Henri Légaré occurred on Wednesday, February 11th, 2015, in Fredericton, NB.
Henri was devoted to his family and friends. His chief interests were his work, being well-read and travelled, stamp collecting and music. He enjoyed two favorite sports, skiing and golfing. Well liked and good humored, he lived his life with joy and passion.
Henri Légaré was born in Charlesbourg, Quebec, on July 8, 1931. After receiving a high school diploma, he attended Laval University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries. He then went to the University of British Columbia, obtaining a Masters degree in Oceanography. Having received a scholarship from the Royal Society of Canada, he pursued advanced studies at the Sorbonne University in Paris. While there, he spent some time with Commandant Jacques Cousteau aboard his ship Calypso, in the Mediterranean, off the south of France.
Upon his return to Canada, he joined the research staff of the Biological Station at St Andrews, NB, after which he moved to Venezuela as a lecturer at the Institute of Oceanography, Universidad de Oriente. From there he was hired by the government of New Brunswick as director of research and later as assistant deputy minister of fisheries.
In 1975, he was appointed as the programme leader of a fisheries development project under the aegis of the United Nations Food Agricultural Organization, working in nineteen countries of West Africa for three and a half years. His international expertise took him on many trade missions to Western and Eastern Europe, Asia, the Middle East and South Africa.
Upon completion of this programme, he returned to his position with the New Brunswick government, where he remained until his retirement in 1992.
Henri is survived by his wife Louise; two sons, Pierre (Sandra) of Brockville, ON, and Mark (Laura) of Fredericton, NB; four grandchildren, one great-grandchild, three step-grandchildren, as well as two brothers and two sisters.
The family wishes to extend sincere gratitude and appreciation for the many years he spent at Thomas Hall, Shannex Parkland, where he received the best of care and devotion from the staff.
There will be a visitation on Saturday, February 14th, 2015, at McAdam’s Funeral Home (160 York Street, Fredericton, NB), from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM.
