Edith Goodyear

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, Edith “May” Goodyear, on Feb. 8, 2015 in the Maritime Oddfellows Home, Pictou.
A longtime resident of Roderick Street, New Glasgow, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Edith (Haggart) Sutherland.
May was a proud volunteer, Serving Sister, and past superintendent of the 701 Combined Division of St John Ambulance in New Glasgow. She served in the New Glasgow corps for 27 years, and was instrumental in the formation of the St John Ambulance Cadet division. She was also a member of the 374 Air Cadet Squadron Parents Auxiliary, and the Mothers Auxiliary of the Ceilidh Pipe Band in New Glasgow.
May enjoyed making quilts, and knitting mittens and socks by the hundreds, supplying family and friends with her labors of love. She loved helping people, and did so quietly, never expecting anything in return.
May will be sadly missed by daughters Marion Doyle, New Glasgow; Marjorie Goodyear (Ernest Majcan) New Glasgow; Jenny Goodyear (Ivan Thompson) New Glasgow; sons Robert Goodyear, Brampton, ON; and George Goodyear (Cheryl), Dartmouth. Eleven grandchildren: Meghan Melanson (Guy), Justin Goodyear, Nicholas MacLennan, Ernest Majcan, Christopher Majcan, all of New Glasgow; Tabatha Goodyear, Brampton ON.; Trevor Goodyear, Ottawa, ON; and Dylon Goodyear, Dartmouth, Aline Samson, Cape Breton; Marie Shannon, Moncton, NB; Peter Shannon, Moncton, NB; and eleven great-grandchildren: Joseph, Candace, Kyle, Sherrie, Balinda, Amanda, Melissa, Samanta, Kierra, Gabriel and William.
Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Eugene (Hughie) Goodyear, daughter Jean Goodyear, and step-daughter Margaret Benoit.
A memorial service will be held at the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, 256 King Street, New Glasgow on Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Glen Matheson presiding. Reception to follow. Burial of ashes at a later date.
Donations may be made in May’s memory to the Maritime Oddfellows Home, Recreation Dept. or the Nova Scotia Alzheimer’s Society.
