Hendrika Sample

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Hendrika “Rita” Sample of the Valley View Villa, Riverton, formerly of Stellarton and McLellan’s Brook, who passed away Feb. 14, 2015 at the villa.
Born in Hoogezand, Holland on Oct. 27, 1931 to Eildert and Aaltja Nieuwold.
Rita came to Canada in 1956 with her first husband Edward Rice and son John.
She worked for several years in retail at the Arcade Ladies Shop and Charm Jewellers, but her main job was homemaker and mother.
She volunteered for the VON and Glen Haven Manor and was a member of the Sharon St. John United Church and the Stellarton Legion.
Mom bowled with the Scott ladies league on Tuesdays and could be found most Sunday evenings at the Stellarton Legion Hootenanny doing what she loved - dancing.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband George Roy Sample, companion Stramberg Jenkins, brothers-in-law James Sample, Frank Sample, William “Bill” Sample and Robert “Bob” Sample, and sisters-in-law Elizabeth Miller and Fern Thompson.
She is survived by sons, John Rice, New Glasgow; Roy Sample, Stellarton; a daughter Kathy (Glen) MacGregor, McLellans Brook; stepson Benvie (Donna) Sample whom she felt was her own son, a step-daughter Ruby (Lew) Jenkins, Fredericton; a brother Fokke Nieuwold, Hoogezand, Holland; brothers-in-law Daniel (Elsie) Sample and Larry Thompson, sisters-in-law, Annie Sample, Penny (John) Sommers, Phoebe Sample and Caroline Dort, many special grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, and nieces.
She is also survived by her special friends at the Villa: Catherine Chisholm and Ada MacKay.
Cremation to take place.
The family will receive visitors from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow from where a memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday Feb. 20, 2015 with Rev. Charles MacPherson presiding.
A reception to follow at the funeral home.
Burial of ashes will take place at a later date at Castle Hill Cemetery, McLellans Brook.
Donations in memory of Rita may be made to the Valley View Villa, the Nova Scotia Lung Association or to the Canadian Cancer Society.
