GARNETT, ROBERT GEORGE
1946 - 2015
It is with great sadness that the family of Robert “Bob” George Garnett announces his passing on February 15, 2015 in Palliative Care at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Bob, the son of the late LeRoy and Rita (nee O’Dell) Garnett was born on January 18, 1946, in Saint John, New Brunswick.
Bob will be greatly missed by his children; Kerry Garnett of Saint John and Peter Garnett of Alberta; the mother of their children Geraldine Garnett of Rothesay; siblings Burt (Willo) Smith of Emsdale, ON., Deborah Perry of Garnett Settlement, Nancy (Norman) White of Summerville, NB and Pamela Penninger of San Diego, Ca., as well as, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many close friends, especially his close cousin Anne Mitton of Fredericton and his loyal friend Jean Tippett of Saint John.
Bob was predeceased by his son Michael Garnett in January of this year and brothers Richard and Bruce Garnett.
Bob was passionate about cars, racing, and speed. He started racing late models/modifieds in the mid-70s at the tracks in Hammond River, River Glade, and Brookside. In 2003 he switched to Open Wheel Racing and for a time was a member of the Atlantic Open Wheel Association. He was the proud owner of his own open-wheel, which he and his team of close friends raced on tracks throughout the Maritimes. He has had many misadventures traveling to the races with his friends in his motor home.
Bob was well-known in Saint John for owning and operating the Wellesley Avenue Shell in the North End for 25 years until his retirement in the Fall of 2014. He also loved driving cab for Royal Taxi, especially when he was able to play tour guide and show off his city to our many tourists. Bob loved gardening, fishing, and playing cards every Thursday night. He lived a full life, making the most of his time with his family and friends. (H.M.W)
The family would like to express special thanks to the wonderful doctors and nurses for their amazing care of Robert while in Palliative Care.
