With sadness we announce the death of Mary Elizabeth Campbell, 105 years, on Feb. 10, 2015. A resident of The Cove Guest Home in Sydney, N.S., she was born in Reserve Mines, the daughter of the late John Henry Matheson and the late Catherine (MacDonald) Matheson.
She lived most of her life in Glace Bay, N.S. A registered nurse, Mary was a graduate of Glace Bay General Hospital School of Nursing in 1931. She then joined the nursing staff of the Inverness Memorial Hospital for several years.
During 70 years of marriage, Mary and her husband Allan lived in Broughton, Glace Bay, Halifax and Sydney, N.S. They were actively involved in the Presbyterian Church in each of these communities. Mary was also active in the General Hospital Alumnae, a 50-year jewel member of Jubilee Rebekah Lodge #14, and 50-year jewel member of Queen Elizabeth Chapter, Order of Eastern Star. Mary enjoyed summers at the cabin on the Mira River with family and friends. In her early years she had been a teacher at Hillside School.
She is survived by her daughter Marjorie Kempton; three grandchildren, Allison (Dan Organ), Alan, Karyn and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband Allan Campbell, her sisters, Christine Grant, Effie Wadden, Dolena MacDonald, her brother William and son-in-law Rev. Avery Kempton.
A memorial service for Mary will be held later in the spring.
Memorials in Mary's memory may be made to St. Paul's Church Building Fund - Glace Bay, The Cove Guest Home Foundation - Sydney or charity of choice.
